“WHERE IS SHE!” Gabriel flinched as he heard the bellow, the sound shaking the whole castle. Ambriel was standing in the corner with Tabbris whispering when they heard the lords roar. Tabbris stopped mid sentence and looked in the direction of the observatory “he sounds mad. What do you think happened?” “I don’t know but id sure hate to be the source of his rage…I once heard that someone had been turned into a mortal for making it rain in the desert” “you lie!..” Gabriel didn’t stick around to hear more. Ducking his head he hurried on and hesitated before creeping into the observatory. “Gabriel! Did you find her?” The room shook and everyone ducked their heads, wings trembling like the cowards they were. Folding his wings he step forward and raise his eyes to the steal gray of the lord’s eyes. One large stubby finger pointing at him accusingly “where is she?” Gabriel swallowed and straightened his back, lowering his eyes “…I’m sorry my lord….she fell…I didn’t see her but no human could survive that fall…” The cloudy figure narrowed its eyes, a shiver running down Gabriel’s spine and he fluffed his wings, ruffling his feathers to keep them from standing on end. “She’s not dead you moron, find her! Bring her back NOW!” with a flurry of feathers every angel in the room launched into the air. Gaining a safe distance Gabriel relaxed but he knew he had to be the first to find the girl. *************** It was getting dark, the sky turning a deep burgundy as the sun ducked behind some branches for a moment. Sighing I looked into the neon flames, wondering if Satan was sitting down for bed as well. I could hardly believe that it was just this morning that id been snatched up and stolen from the devil but suddenly it felt like forever. Movement caught my eye and I jumped up. “Relax Lin, it’s just me” I smiled weakly, pushing away the fear I felt. “I didn’t hear you come back…” Zal laughed softly “were you expecting someone else?” A little mad at myself I turn away and poke at the fire with a stick. “You get more wood?” Zal slithered up and flicked his tongue out at me teasingly as ha dropped a load of wood by the fire “of course your mortalness.” Giggling I threw a handful of leaves at him and he flapped his wings, stirring up the leaves and small sticks and making them fly all around me. Falling down at the sudden gust of wind I laugh louder. “Stop that you silly winged snake!” Zal let out a gasp, his voice full of mock indignation as he raised himself up. “I am not a snake! I’m a serpent.” “What’s the difference?” “Umm...Well…..I...I don’t really know” giggling I let it drop and feed more wood onto the fire before curling up to sleep. After a few minutes Zal followed me, coiling around me and fanning one wing over in a makeshift shelter. It wasn’t long before I passed out from exhaustion. My dreams were full of feathers and angelic figures and cloudy beings and then I was falling. As I hit the ground everything went black and I bolted upright, gasping for air and flailing. “Hush, Hush Lin. Your ok, everything’s ok. You’re safe.” As my sight cleared I stopped squirming and I sat still, panting as I pushed away the images and hugged Zal’s tail. “There’s a good girl, breathe. You’re safe.” Zal whispered to me in a soothing voice, waiting till my breathing had slowed before asking if I was ok and I nodded softly. “Have a bad dream?” I nodded again and he tightens his coils around me in a full body hug, his head resting on my shoulder. We stay like that for a few minutes until suddenly he raises his head into the air and his eyes widen and he uncoils, pushing me towards the woods. Hiding under a tree with him slithering his way up, peeking out among the branches I shout up to him “what’s wrong Zal?” He didn’t respond, just stretched out farther on the branch. “Zal?” “Hush Lin.” I flinched at the grim tone of his voice. “listen” I strained my ears to hear what was putting him on edge. At first it was faint, barely recognizable but as it grew louder there was no doubt what it was. The soft pounding of wings beating at the air quickly, almost as if in a frenzy. they were heading this way and fast.
