I woke with a start my heart beating against my ribcage as the crimson of my dreams faded and reality crept in. once again I awoke to a strange place. Shivering I looked around, studying the opaque walls through the darkness. They appeared rough and uneven. At the entrance a soft golden light poured in but it was not enough to push back this oppressive darkness. Was that a bush just outside? Pushing myself up I shivered, wrapping my arms around myself as I searched for the devil but he was nowhere in sight. I started to panic, my thoughts whirling franticly as I stumbled through the darkness in search of him but the more I searched the more I felt abandoned and the more I panicked. Sniffling loudly I press my back to the cold wall, sliding down I curl in a ball and let the tears streak down my cheeks. Suddenly there was a rustle from outside and a large shadow filled the entrance. “Why do you cry so much my dear?” I jumped to my feet and looked at him, a smile quickly spreading across my face. “I’d thought you left me.” He shook his head and laughed in his good naturedly way “I could never do that Lin.” He crossed the space in two strides and took me in his arms, wiping away my tears as he always did then took my hand and together we left the cave. I had to squint my eyes as we left the darkness, my eyes adjusting to the bright morning sun that illuminated the sky giving it a deep pink color. Smiling I looked around, trying to figure out where we were but this was farther out then satin had ever let me go. For a moment I forgot about the events of last night and I ran out into the field of cerise dandelions and jade cosmos and crimson forget-me-nots. The colors were extraordinary and gave new beauty to the well known flowers. Raising my arms high I sin myself in circles, giggling as I go around and around till I get dizzy and fall down and I laugh some more. Even the devil laughs at my silliness. A strong gust of wind tugs at my hair and tosses the pink dandelion poof’s seeds into the air. I sit up and watch them go for a second before another gust brings with it the scent of ash and smoke and my smile quickly fades. The confusion from last night returning once more. I look up at satin and it’s clear he knows what I’m thinking of, his smile likewise disappearing as he joins me in the field. He looks awkward sitting there in the brightly colored flowers in his black and I had to suppress a smile. He cleared his throat “you have questions” it wasn’t s question. I nodded anyways and he waited for me to ask. I swallowed uncomfortably. “What was he?” he smiled but it wasn’t a happy smile. It was sad somehow. “He was an angel my dear” “but…why did he…?” I trailed off, my voice shaking with emotion. Setting a hand on my shoulder to comfort me he shook his head. “I broke the rules my dearest Lin” “what you mean?” He suddenly pulled me close to him and hugged me tight and I could feel his unease as he began his tale. “Long ago when man was young, living in caves and eating raw meat and berries there was just a few of us in heaven. We watched as man struggled and occasionally made bets on how long one would live. Wed bet on how long till war broke out, we bet on how many would die and sometimes wed even step in to keep things going. We were perfect and as such we took great entertainment in their faults but as time passed things changed…I changed” I watched his face as he talked and though all but his eyes were covered I could easily pick out his emotions. First was guilt and then regret and sorrow. The look in his eyes telling of a great loss though his story skipped over it. “I lost interest in the bets and the cruelties of watching brother kill brother over nothing. I wanted to do something to advance the race past the senseless violence and help them thrive so one day I appeared to a woman and over the course of a few days I taught her how to produce fire and she in turn taught her tribe who taught their allies and over time as alliances shifted the knowledge was passed to all and a new era began.” He paused as though remembering every detail, his brows furrowed and even covered I could tell he was frowning. Even after all the time that had passed whatever had happened, it still weighed heavily at him. “The big man wasn’t happy that id helped man and the other angels looked at me weird after that, whispering among themselves when I’d pass by. I ignored it, not much else I could do. As time went by the angels seemed to forget of my interference and things returned to as they were and I returned to watching mans struggles with the others.” Another pause. “It wasn’t long before once again my conscience prickled with the injustices I saw but I held back, waiting to see if they could right it themselves. They couldn’t and as the angels were away I sent a message to a young man through a bush wreathed in flames and I instructed him how to fix the scale but it didn’t go as easy as I had hoped and I found myself stepping in several times until I was the one doing the harm I wished to prevent and so I returned to the young man and instructed him to gather up the oppressed and lead them away and I would keep them from harm till they were safe. It was just as he was leading them to safety that I was caught and though I held as long as I could I had to let go too early and some of them were lost.” His voice was gloomy as he spoke of his interventions but not as much so when he mentioned the loss of lives on the journey to safety. The pain and regret he felt hung thick in the air as he continued his story and I leaned against him, trying to comfort him as he did me so often. “I was then dragged away before the HIM and forced to confess my interference. They watched me closely after that. There was no way the others would forget this time so I just sat and watched man as they fell into chaos. Finding themselves without direction they became disorderly and the young man I had helped went in search of the direction the people needed. I resisted the urge to help him but in the end I sent him two stone tablets that fell from the sky in a ball fire. He brought these back to the others and order was restored…” He trailed off. Pausing once more this time a small hint of pride in his voice, barely discernable amongst the sorrow but it was there. “…However that was the last straw for me. He banished me from the heavens and forced me into the fiery center of earth and tore my wings from my back so I could not leave. I stayed here for centuries, studying my new surroundings and learning the tricks the plants and animals offered me and in time I learned how to escape my dungeon but I stayed. This became my home and I enjoyed it here…but I was alone...HE had forbidden me to have anyone here with me and for the most part I abided that…until now, when I found you” I heard all his loneliness, his sadness and his longing and with his last words, his hope and love. I hugged him close smiling softly despite the circumstances. “The angels leave me alone here but last night they came to destroy you Lin.” Despite his pride his voice shook and I hugged him tighter. “I’m not afraid” he laughs, the sound forced as he pats my head and holds me at arm’s length, looking straight in my eyes “you should be my dear. I know I am. I’m afraid that I’ve put the only thing I care about in grave danger”
