Chapter 16:

Maxson kept to his word as he spoke to ever member of the Brotherhood. Those in the base, and the ones in the Prydwen. He wanted to make damn sure everyone got the hint he wouldn't stand for this kind of behavior. However as he was taken to a small makeshift holding cell he wasn't sure what step to take. In the four years Maxson had been Elder he had never dealt with anything like this. He had even spoken to Kells about this, but even he was unsure of how to properly deal with the situation. So later that night Sara was called to his office. She watched quietly as he paced the room. "You keep doing that, you'll tear a hole through your floor." Much to her surprise he stops and turns to her. "I am simply debating how to handle Knight Veris. I'm aware discipline is needed..." "But you've never ran into this problem before have you?" Maxson lets out a low growl at this as he nods. "I would think my men would know...better. What makes this worse is just how long he's been pulling this off without notice..." Sara watches him closely. "Well, it's mostly up to you. Honestly...even I have to admit killing him might be...much.." Maxson turns his gaze to her as she looks up. "Keeping him in lock up is...unrealistic..." She gives him a small shrug. "You can always give him grunt work. You know, the stuff normally given to new recruits." She knits her brows a bit. "You're allowed to strip his rank I would imagine." Maxson gives it some thought. "But he might just...try this again...what then?" She lets out a low sound, he made a point. They could discipline the Knight, but there was always a chance he wouldn't learn a damn thing from it.

"Hmmm good point, damn this leadership stuff sucks doesn't it?" She didn't envy the man, all of this was on his shoulders. Everyone was looking at him to make the right choice. "Well I'm the one that caught him, so I got a say right?" She didn't miss the look of relief on his face. "That you do Knight." Even if it was just the two of them, this was strictly business, at the moment. Still she had no clue where to go from here. "Stupid question on my end, but don't you guys have another base somewhere?" Maxson raises his brow at her. "We do, but it's separate from mine. Are you suggesting we let the other division handle this?" She holds out her hand a bit. "Honestly, I'm not sure what to suggest." Setting him free seemed like a poor choice, so that meant. She lets out a low sigh. "I hate to say it, but we might just have to execute him. God that sounds awful, but he's proven he can't be trusted no matter what route we take here." Maxson takes in a deep breath as he nods. "I'll see to it myself then in the morning. Until then the Knight can sit in his cozy cell next to Senior Scribe Neriah's Mole Rats." Sara feels her jaw drop as she laughs. "You didn't, oh that horrible, and funny at the same time.." Maxson just shrugs at this however. "It'll keep him on his toes for the night.." She lets out another laugh as she shakes her head slowly. "Fair enough, Mole Rats though, that'll make people think twice."

Maxson looked rather please as he turns and walks over to her. He seems to look her over before letting out a short breath. "I keep asking this, but are you sure you're...alright?" She tilts her head at him. "I'm just fine, wouldn't be the first time I've had to deal with something like this....unfortunately." Maxson frowns at this as she holds up her hands. "Back at my old job, my.." She tries to find the best way to phrase this. "My past managers ex husband, man that's a mouth full. He would swing by and try to ask me out." She shudders as she looks away. "This guy was old enough to be my dad. And what's worse was he kept hitting on one of my other managers. Who was, not only younger then I was, but had a kid. That's just....gah it was...there's just no words..." She shakes her head a bit. "I got the feeling he was willing to try and make a pass at anyone, still, dude, limits....so past my comfort zone..." He was shaking his head at this. "Disrespectful....I'm glad you got out of that environment." She nods her head slowly, she was glad to be away from that mess. Even if, technically, she never quit. She wondered if they had noticed seeing that about a week or so had passed. "Same, when I handed in my uniform, I never looked back. I know, sounds crazy to leave behind a stable home life, but after awhile it just wasn't worth me stressing out over, well everything..." She throws her hands out a bit. "I didn't have much to start with, so I packed what little I needed and just started walking until I got...here."

Sure there were a few things she wished she had, but there wasn't much she could do about it. "But hell if nothing else, it's sure has taught me a lot.." She moves side to side a bit. One of the few habits she picked up while working. While standing for so long she would just start to sway side to side to keep the blood going. That way her legs wouldn't get to sore from working so many hours. "I still multitask like there's no tomorrow, I think my poor mind got used to keeping busy I never really know what to do with myself when I have free time. Hell I had one day I was just standing in my living room, going: I have the day off, the hell am I doing just standing here?" She hangs her head as she shakes it lightly. He was just watching her, sway slightly. "Are you...why are you swaying like that?" She looks up as she stops. "Oh sorry, it's something I picked up. Keeps me going when I'm stuck talking orders, after awhile standing for seven hours starts to hurt.." Maxson just sits her down as she chuckles up at him. "Guess it got annoying to watch." He lets out a low huff. "If you need a break just take one.." She lets out a small gasp. "I get breaks, oh hell yeah, half the time I never got mine, and I'd be working eight hour shifts...starving my butt off. I don't need to lose weight, bad enough I need a belt." She was still convinced health class lied to her about gaining weight. "Slower metabolism my left foot, I still feel like I eat like I'm still a teenager half the time..." Maxson lets out a low chuckle at this. "Good to know that never changes.."

She rolls her eyes at him as she sits back in her chair. "Easy for you to say, at least you got muscle." Even with his coat on, it was still easy to see the hard line of muscle he had under it. He seems to relax after a bit as he pulls up his other chair and sits in front of her. He still wasn't to sure about, well any of this. Though her remark from earlier was still in the back of his mind. He wasn't going to remark on that just yet. He just wasn't sure how to approach this. While there was nothing in the rule books holding him back. that didn't mean he had any real idea on what he was doing. However she didn't seem to be pushing him either way. This was all up to him. A few minutes pass before he talks again. "Aside from people trying to make a pass on you...have you...well?" She rises her brow at his question. "Been in an relationship? Yeah, I mean...it's....been awhile.." Years in fact, she looks down at the floor. "I really don't get out much, but I was...twenty-one I think when we met. Broke up with him four years later.." She looks up as Maxson shifts in his seat. "Any...reason it didn't work?" He was silently kicking himself, he shouldn't be asking personal questions. He's already asked more then he should. She should tell him the truth, but by the look on his face he was already starting to become uncomfortable. He was no expert on the mater, he was trying to figure things out. She decides to be honest, no point on hiding anything. "It was nothing serous, I think a part of me just realized, what we had wasn't...working I guess."

Maxson tilts his head back a bit as she continues. "Not going to lie most of it was on my end. It's hard to be with someone and not have some voice telling you that at some point he'll find someone better..." She lets out a low sigh as he leans forward. "I know that feeling..." She leans back as he talks. "I often wonder how the Brotherhood views me as a leader. If they even see me as a proper leader, or just another Maxson. A long line of leaders, and the only reason I'm here now is because of it." She listens quietly, never realizing how much weight his name just might carry. "I understand, but you're here because of your own actions as well. I have to admit your one hell of a leader, and I see the respect everyone has." He lets out another huff at this. "Respect...or fear..a part of me wonders if there's even a difference.." She crosses her arms at him. "Do I look scared?" He glares at her, but she doesn't budge. "Trust me, I have all the respect in the world for ya, but I'm not scared. As long as I follow the rules right and not do something stupid. Which in my case it's bound to happen but hey, it's gotten me here." She watches as he brings his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. She couldn't help but chuckle at him. "Aww am I making you flustered again?" "You're horrible and I should lock you up with the Mole Rats." She lets out a good laugh, he might have done so, but something told her he wouldn't. "You enjoy it and you just don't have anything witty to say." There was another pause. "Perhaps I simply don't know what to say.." He turns his eyes to her as she smiles brightly. "That's fine, don't see me complaining do ya?" He lets out another sound from the back of his throat.

"I don't..." Maxson seems to take a minute before saying anything. "You are by far the most confusing person I've met. Yet you're also the most dedicated, so I give you that." He rises his hand to smooth his hair back. He should be putting his mind on the mission. There was still a lot of work that needed to be taken care of after all. Still there was something oddly, relaxing about all of this. "That you put up with any of this is quiet...different." She laughs softly at that. "Oh it's not that bad, and I'm going to be honest I kind of enjoy watching you handle this." His brows rise at this. "It's down right adorable." He frowns at that as she starts laughing again. "Okay okay, sorry..." She wasn't sorry, not by a long shot. "Alright, I'll stop...I'm a horrible flirt anyways." She watches as he ducks his head as she gives him a surprised look. "Ohhhhhhh....I see." She may had caught him of guard, but her remark seemed to have left some kind of impression on him. "The plot thickens.." She brings her hands together as she taps her fingers together. He rises his hands up after a minute or so as if he was silently surrendering. "Alright, I got the hint, I'll leave you to it. I'll get back to work tomorrow, with any luck Nate will be back soon." She looks down a bit, it was hard not to worry about the guy. "After that, we'll just have to wait and see right?" He slowly stands as he holds out his hand to her. She takes it as he grips her tightly as pulls her up. She blushes deeply as he sets her on her feet. "Oh that is so unfair..." He gives her a rather cocky grin as he holds her there for a second.

"Well it evens the field I think.." He leans a bit closer as she keeps her eyes on him. "Is that so?" That split second where he looked unsure she leans in and kisses his cheek. That causes him to let go of her hand as she steps back. "Alright, I'll play your game." She gives him a wink as she turns to leave. "Good night Elder." She waves as she struts out of his room. The only thing he could do was watch as she swayed her hips. This woman was just pure evil, and Steal help him he was enjoying every minute of it. No one had ever kept him on his feet like this before. Reality slowly sinks in as he turns to see Paladin Danse starting to enter his room. It was just in front of Maxson's as he looks up. "Mason sir, you're still awake.." Danse wasn't sure if he should tell the man his face was as red as a Tato. Maxson shakes his head after a minute. "Last minute paper work to deal with..." He move to the side as Danse turns and walks in. "I heard what happened, that Knight Veris tried to..." Maxson shoots him a look. "Yes...I'm not sure what bothers me more, that my own team is pulling this. Or the fact some of them were turning a blind eye to it. Either way I'm going to investigate farther." Danse nods his head to this. "Of course sir...what will you do with Knight Veris?" Maxson shakes his head as he rubs his temple with his fingers. "That's what I was debating, but I believe we have both come to an agreement to execute him. There's no point keeping someone like him aboard if we can't trust him." Danse slowly bows his head to this. "It's unfortunate sir, but we can't allow something like this to continue."

Maxson pulls out a chair and Danse takes a seat. He had left his power armor at it's station to recharge the fusion core. Maxson pours them both a drink, but Danse was fine with just taking a simple beer at the moment since he was heading in for the night. "Danse.." The Paladin looks up at his friend. "Arthur." He seems to think on his words a bit. "You've never been close to anyone...have you?" Danse gives him a surprised look as he sits back. "Not...really.." Maxson understood that Danse hadn't really been the same after Cutler had been turned into a Super Mutant. Maxson lets out a deep sigh. "I suppose that's the price we pay for doing this job. Keeping people safe, now with Liberty Prime being built. It feels like it's finally building up to something. We'll still have our work cut out for us once this is over with. I have no doubt in my mind that taking out the Institute won't solve all the problems out there." Danse leans forward a bit, forgetting about his drink for now. "So you're trying to plan for the future? Maxson looked tired as he leans back. "Planing, and failing horribly to be honest." He stands up after a minute. "I've always tried to cover every possible outcome..." Danse tilts his head to the side as he slowly seems to figure out what he was talking about. "I see, up to now.." Maxson turns so sharply Danse almost falls out of chair. "This shouldn't be an issue, I don't even know, why I keep thinking about it. Or even what to think of this..." Danse slowly stands as he holds out his hands. "Arthur...breath.." He watches his friend take a deep breath as he slowly seems to came back. "You're confused, I suppose that's only natural.." Danse was doing his best here even if he had about as much experience in the matter as Arthur.

"She's been working for us..how long?" Maxson looks up at the question. "A couple of weeks, at best." He frowns as he looks at Danse, of course he would catch on. He was just really good at keeping his mouth shut. Danse was a bit surprised by this. Such a short amount of time, there must be something different about this one. "As your friend Arthur, you should just take this one day at a time. I may not understand completely what's going on in your mind right now." He looked tired as he rubs the back of his neck. "Right...there's so much to do. Between the spy and this, what more can go wrong?" Danse shakes his head at him as he holds his shoulder lightly. "Get some sleep, if you need me, I'm never far you know.." Maxson slowly nods at this as he places his hand on Danse's. Even through all the Hell they had gone through, he was still the one person he could rely on. "Thank you old friend, just do me a favor.." Danse nods at this. "Keep an eye on her tomorrow...just until we know for sure if Nate....Knight Thomson is returning to us..." Danse smiles at this and nods. "Of course sir...Arthur, try not to worry so much..." With one last comfortable pat between friends Danse leaves to get some sleep himself as Maxson returns to the quiet he was more then used to. But somehow it was different now as he smiles slightly. Tomorrow was another day, so he gets himself ready for bed as he just sinks into his mattress. He buries his head into his pillow as he slowly tries to shut his mind off. "So much to do, worry about it tomorrow..." He slips into a deep slumber, he'll worry about everything else once he got to that part.
