About: I thought of a story that I have never quite heard before, so I decided to try and elaborate on the thought and write a novel. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the premise of my story, or the basis of it. Would you read it? Does it sound boring? Do you have any suggestions? Please, give me your thoughts.
[NOTE: I have not posted any content of my novel so far, I don't plan on it until perhaps somebody asks to see a sample of what I have written, feel free to ask though ]
Time Period:
Born in 1827, the story occurs in 1900, when Dorian is the age of 73.
About The Main Character:
Dorian is an older English industrialist and philanthropist, age 73 . He finds contentment in tending to his estate and maintains a separation from his son whom has long since moved out of his home. He is accompanied by his wife, who is roughly 10 years younger, she is perfectly healthy and alert. He had always believed that he had lived his life the way he had wanted, but during the course of his ailment, he moves closer to wondering if he had truly done everything that he wanted.
Short Version: The main character had always believed that he had lived his life the way he had wanted, but during the course of his ailment, he moves closer to wondering if he had truly done everything that he wanted. As a means of compensating this feeling of doubt, he began to live his adventures, some realistic and some quite outlandish and stunning, within his dreams - until his final day upon this world. Please read the paragraph below for a more realistic stance about the story.
Premise:
Within the beginning of the book Dorian is doing what he loves, reading, writing, tending to his estate, etc. He collapses. He has had a stroke. He progressively makes it towards his death bed, for example: the stroke puts him in a wheel chair, he then progressively gets worse and must take to bed. The stroke has made him extremely weak, but not incomprehensible, brain damaged, etc.
[NOTE: THE DYING PROCESS CAN TAKE 1-3 MONTHS, OR DAYS]
I plan on the story taking place in the course of a few months.
The stroke has also heightened his creativity and perception on his life.
He begins to think about his life and the events within. He remembers that although he has enjoyed his life, he fears that he has not accomplished everything that he may have wanted. He wonders what adventures, what wonders he may have missed. After the stoke, he plays out these would be adventures in his head; some realistic and some very outlandish. The accident allowed him to live out these adventures in his final days.
Progress:
I have just started actually. I have the basic opening scene where it introduces the character, shows what he usually does, explains his position in life, and ultimately delivers the fateful stroke; which is 483 words long. I plan on elaborating and adding details until I am fully content with the scene. I also plan on elaborating and adding details to each additional scene until I feel the story has come to an end. I realize that when writing a novel, volume is not the means to do it by, it is supposed to be the content. I plan on delivering both content and volume, so that it's not too short of a read and so that it is not dull and life draining.
Again, what are your thoughts? What about a title for the book, what comes to mind when you think of this story?
