It took a while for Melba to get used to calling her Mom. But once she started, she never stopped. Yilanti loved the idea of being a mom. However, in the first few weeks she realized taking care of a child was nothing like taking care of a family member. She first noticed her expenses were now a lot higher. Gas, water, food, clothes, all the basic needs that had to be covered came with quite a price.
They currently resided in normal looking house, which was settled right above Tome's lair. Yilanti had insisted on living a normal life, despite Tome's complaints. Tome could still have his lair, but Melba was not to know of it.
It was quite hard, and though she was thankful for the fact that her child was already quite smart and independent, she hoped she wasn't smart enough to find Tome's lair. Maybe she should have taken someone younger? Then again, she couldn’t imagine raising someone who needed potty training.
She sighed. “I’m a pretty crap mom, not wanting to take care of a kid who wets his pants.” She loved Melba, but she realized Tome may have been right about the responsibility of a kid. She just hoped she could get used to it.
“Mom!” She heard a yell from the front door. She got up and saw her girls pants all soaking wet. Was this some joke of fate?
“Those stupid boys kicked water from a puddle on my pants.” Melba cried. She looked like a shlumped wet mess, wearing those pants. Yilanti gave her a big hug.
”There there, it’s alright. I’ll call the boys parents for you so they can be told off. Alright? Now go watch some tv and take off your wet pants, I’ll get you some dry ones.” Melba nodded and went off.
Yilanti realized that her child may be smart, but she was still a child, prone to mishaps and influence. She headed to the laundry room and took a pair of clean pants out of the laundry basket for Melba. There she found Tome.
“Tome! What are you doing there?” She asked, surprised.
“Have you ever felt this woman? It’s soft, warm and dry… Aaah, I could spend ages in here.” Tome snuggled the clothes. Yilanti grabbed him by the neck and picked him up.
“Hey!”
“Look, we don’t want clothes with cat hair all over them.” She said, and put him down next to the basket.
“You’ve got a big mouth since you got the kid. I’m still master of your soul, you know!”
“I know. But as a mother I need to put Melba first and your desires to take over the world second.” She said, folding the pants.
“I’ll still collect souls for you Tome. But just a lot less now.” She walked off to deliver the pants.
Tome huffed. He never guessed that his right hand would have so much time to spend on her kid.
“At least she’ll leave me more alone now when I’m plotting doomsday devices.” He said, wandering off, his tail waving in the air.
Melba was already waiting for her in the living room looking at the television. Yilanti handed her the new dry pants.
"Hey mom, did you know there's a prom coming up?"
Yilanti raised an eyebrow. "Sound interesting."
