Predator and prey
He stands upon his rocky height
Under cover of the night
Awaiting prey’s definite flight
His haunches bunched to leap and bite
She stands beneath the forest trees
Frozen in fear with quivering knees
Hoping one will hear her silent pleas
Her brown coat ruffled by the breeze
He hears the thunder of oncoming heard
His feet a-flight as though a bird
Impressions become smudged and blurred
Claws connect with stampeding blizzard
She bucks at sudden wait on back
Edges of vision going black
As teeth close round and lion attacks
She gives a final valiant hack
He fastens muzzle around his prey
As deer’s resolve begins to fray
She falls to the ground without despair
Happy to save her heard and heir
The dance will begin even as it ends
Eternally nature sways and bends
Perhaps, next time, mountain lion will die,
As prey retreats into the sky.
Laura
You were shorter than me
Even though I was only nine
You gave us money
You wrote letters
I never wrote back
I know I should have
But I didn’t
I didn’t
You were carrying oxygen
The last time I saw you
But you just smiled at me
And I smiled too
You called me
I never called back
I know I should have
But I didn’t
I didn’t
And then they told me
You were sick in the hospital
And you wrote to me from your deathbed
And I wrote back
But you didn’t get the letter
Because you were already gone
Now I know
I should have called
I should have written
But I didn’t
I didn’t
Monday
Is it really all that great?
You build something from Lego bricks
And it has wheels.
But then, attach a motor, and wham!
Suddenly animated.
Algebra, schmalgebra, I say.
But you need it for this,
And this is much more interesting
Than equations in a notebook.
Biology is better
books new and crisp, with that
Library smell
The teacher speaks in
A monotone
As she tells of Shakespearean lore.
And
It’s only Monday.
