Horses
Remind me--
When was the last time
That I broke a nutshell?
What belongs within
Is taken away
Gentling contains it
Harshness steals it
A jewel is
Precious
That which we hold dear
Can be more precious
Those who seek
With greed
Ruin the purity of simplicity
Owls fly silently
Through your empty barn
Just as thoughts and emotions
Float softly through your empty soul
Still young and unnourished
Satisfy your hunger
Thoughts, dreams, wishes gallop
Nearly unnoticed
Through your life--just like
The horses your family sold.
Remind me--
When was the last time that I
Stole an apple
From the tree in your yard?
A rule is made to be
Broken
So they say, but
Acts of kindness
Are difficult, while acts
Of indifference are easy.
You still polish your saddle
Your family still keeps barn cats
Your barn has not fallen
Into despair.
Though your soul
May be empty
It may not be beyond your reach
Just like the horses
That gallop in your dreams.
