Honestly. I love my Mom, but sometimes I wonder if I wasn't switched at birth or something. *sigh* Both of my parents are republicans, and I am...not.
I occasionally receive rhetoric laden emails from them - most of which I barely glance at before deleting them. Tonight I got the one below from my Mom, and could not stop myself from 'rebutting' it and sending it back to her. (I am not on welfare, but I and my parents have had to receive it in the past) My responses are in red:
BOY I LIKE THIS ONE.KEEP IT GOING AND VOTE HER IN TO OFFICE.
This makes perfect sense to me. It sounds more like tyranny to me.
This was written by a 21 yr old female who gets it. It's her future she’s worried about and this is how she feels about the social welfare big government state that she’s being forced to live in! Texas is a social welfare big government state? Get the ******** out! Maybe Rick Perry should fix that before he presumes to 'fix' the country. These solutions are just common sense in her opinion. Yeah, because all the 21 year olds I've met have definitely got it all figured out.
This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco , TX Nov 18, 2010
Put me in charge . . .
Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job. I looked it up - a Lone Star card is what they call 'ebt' in Texas. So what she's saying here is that welfare recipients must exist on a more or less vegan diet devoid of any type of sugar or meat and they aren't worthy of things like fresh milk, fruit or vegetables.
Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal ligations. Norplant, eh?
Side-Effects and Health Risks of Norplant : Common side effects include menstrual disturbances, headaches, acne, weight gain, nausea, anxiety, hair loss, and ovarian cysts. Because of these problems, half of all Norplant users have the implants surgically removed before the third year, despite the fact that Norplant is intended as a five-year contraceptive. insurance companies, which paid for insertion, do not always pay for removal. Removal takes more time, costs more,(hey, who pays to remove it when they get off welfare, hmmm?) and can cause severe scarring.
While we're on the subject of birth control - tubal ligation's also require expensive surgery to reverse - so in her world it's 'give up your reproductive right possibly forever' or starve to death. But hey, it's your choice - right?
Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job. Alcohol and nicotine are legal in the United States. I don't know about Texas, but in Minnesota you can not use your ebt card to buy cigarettes or alcohol. Tattoos and Piercings? I pierced my own ears back when I was what - 10(?) years old, and most of my tattoos were free - I didn't pay for them, someone else paid the tab (in other words they were gifts). If I want to get any more piercings, I have friends who can do it for me for no charge. Drug testing? Really? I seem to recall you telling me that YOUR drug test came up positive. It was a false positive, but still...what if you were unable to prove it was a false positive?
Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks?
You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. People on section 8 are ALREADY subject to yearly inspections and expected to keep their home clean and in good repair. Failure to do so will result in your account being suspended or closed. Did you know that the inspector threatened to cut Heidi off because she switched her living room and bedroom around? She did it because the air conditioner is in the living room and it was too hot to sleep in the bedroom. She was told that the bedroom had to have a closet and a door and if she didn't change it back she would fail her inspection. Never mind the fact that the existing bedroom 'door' was just a curtain and she doesn't use the closet because it can't open with the bed in there. So she spent the summer sleeping on her living room floor.
Inspecting anytime? Yeah, it doesn't surprise me that she expects you to give up your privacy as well. Hopefully they won't pop in when you're in the shower or trying to get over the flu or something.
If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a
job and your own place. Uh huh. Better alert the mother-in-law not to buy the grandkids an xbox for Christmas - for that matter, you clearly don't deserve anything for Christmas...or your birthday. Not even a cake or ice cream by the looks of the grocery list above.
In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. Yup, fine. Will this go on my resume? When do I get time look for a permanent job if you have me doing the 'government' job everyday? If I have kids, are you going to watch them while I'm picking up trash? Hell, If the government could help hook me up with a permanent job, maybe I wouldn't need to be on welfare in the first place?! We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..” So you can't own anything of value - even if you had it before you wound up on welfare? Hey remember when I was little and we got food stamps? It sounds to me like little Miss Hitler thinks Dad should have sold his truck first...and his gold wing.
Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Again, forced vegan diet, no kids (possibly ever), no receiving gifts of any kind, give up your right to any kind of privacy and sell anything of value that you may own. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem. Nahhh, being forced to radically change your diet, inventory your possessions, sell your valuable belongings, give up your privacy and have all your tats and piercings cataloged like you're a criminal isn't demeaning at all! Would you like someone to strip search you so they can photograph and make a note of every tattoo or piercing you might have? Just because I can't see any on your arms doesn't mean you might not have one on your boobs or a**. It'll be on you to prove there aren't any.
If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices. As I recall, my mistake was being bullied by supervisors who fired me from my job at a company that then fought my unemployment claim by telling blatant lies about me. Danny's bad choice was being diagnosed with cancer. What was you and Dads mistake or bad choice when we were on welfare?
AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job. Conflict of interest?! How?! Why does being on assistance suddenly render my opinion invalid? Currently in the U.S., if you are a citizen and registered you can vote - only felons and those deemed mentally incompetent by a judge can not vote. But then it doesn't surprise me that she thinks anyone unfortunate enough to be on welfare should be lumped into the same category as felons and the mentally incompetent. I'm sure she also thinks that everyone on welfare is living high on the hog with no desire for gainful employment or intention of leaving the system. She's wrong. Yes there are some people on welfare that 'play' the system - and they give everyone else on welfare a bad name. But guess what? There are gainfully employed people who 'play the system' too. They take advantage of tax loopholes, lie about their assets and some of them are responsible for the migration of jobs to places like India and China.
I'm willing to bet that she, herself, would flail and scream like a 2 year old being told 'no' in the candy aisle if she had to abide by her own tyrannical rules.
s**t happens, Life doesn't always go as planned - that doesn't mean everyone who finds themselves applying for assistance should be punished for it or treated like a common criminal.
