The small farming village was a welcome sight to Durgan, because his goddess had been right: He wouldn't have lasted long on his own. He did the best he could to make himself understood without words, and help the peasants with their work in exchange for food.
In the evenings, his goddess taught him things he did not want to know - of the old ways, before mankind. HER ways. ...and at the mercy of his captor, he couldn't do much else than listen.
"You humans are a foolish lot. You make up gods you wish to believe in, and have lost your faith in sacrifice. Most insects are more 'wise' than you are. ...but you have been chosen, Durgan. Whether you want it or not, you will be separated from the herd, and be made into my image, and you will come to learn what it means to live."
At first Durgan tried to scream as her essence burned itself into him, but with time he found less and less reason to deny her. He had no choice.
Then one late evening, riders came to town. Durgan spotted them early, and instinctively ran, and this saved his life. He watched from hiding as the soldiers started to drag people into the street, asking them questions, and when they were led to what had been his camp site not long ago, they shut the villagers inside their houses, and set fire to them. As the desperate screams from the village that had harbored him echoed out into the night, the flames lit up their leader, a female paladin wearing the queens armor, with long, black hair framing a calm and almost kind expression, and the large woman who had passed out the torches. Durgan watched them as they watched the village burn down, them both glowing from within with the blessing of his goddess, and he tried his best to make sense of why his goddess would give her blessing of this, as they clearly acted on behalf of the queen.
As the screams were silenced, and they made sure that no one was left alive, they left, putting up a sign at the outskirt of the site: "village destroyed for aiding the notorious outlaw Durgan the Vile, whose atrocious acts across the kingdom is a crime against all that is just and sacred. Let this stand as an example of the justice of Her Majesty The Queen."
"Your reputation is growing among the humans.", his goddess said. "They are seeing you all across the kingdom now. You are transcending your human form, and becoming a part of a larger scheme. You are becoming legend."
