an accpmplished spirit detective, Kei started making a name for himself after the day he died protecting a girl from a band of thugs. as it so happened, the the leader was a demon in a human guise, which was the end to his untimly demise. though, by making a deal with Kawinma, he was grated the chance to come back temporarily to seek out his killer and stop him before he killed the girl.
though his body was still technically "dead" (with no chance of letting his mortal wound heal yet), he still preserved in order to save the girl. in light of kei's strength, preservation, will, and adaptibility, kawinma gave kei his life back, and made him a spirit detective.
and though his body was healed, the scar from that fateful day rameins. given the chance to erase the mark from his body, kei denied. saying it was like a birth mark. the mark that showed the death of his "lifeless life" and the birth of his actual life. and wanted to keep it in rememberance.
Bio/background: not much of one really. his family was about upper middle class. not super rich, but not impoverished either. but his mom usually worked all day while his dad had nights. so hardly saw either of them. and when he did, they seemed more focused on helping his older brother and even older sister. so feeling unimportant to everyone in the house, kei left to live on his own in a small appartment in town. getting a job at a locally owned convenience store to pay for rent. as well as obtaining an obsession on coffee, with the owner of a cafe he applied to giving him discounts (the owner hated how this kid at 14 was allowed to live on his own, and hated his parents for it. so helped kei with what he could, until he and kei talk more like old friends as opposed to clerk and customer).
along his work as a detective, he met a gril named KoKo, and a flame demon named Sol. though an odd mix, the two are his greatest friends. despite their teasing about his supposed "feelings" for a waitress at blacKat cafe. another of his friends named Yukiko
in general, kei is kind and gental. values the lives of others, and will even throw himself in front of the flame to save others. he's polite, and can get shy a lot.

Sol is a flame demon, who happened to be the suspect/perp of Kei's first offical case as spirit detective; having stolen something called the "fire pendant" from the spirit world vault.
being chased down/found out by Kei, and losing to a fight, Sol gave up. but said that he would one day beat Kei. though, this little relationship between the two quickly form into a friendship.
he's much more smooth and suave than Kei. and having a slight british accent only makes him more desirable to women (or..more so than kei at least). and is an avid AT fan, even having his own team. so is seen about 95% of the time with AT's on his feet.
Rain (called KoKo by Kei), is just a normal human girl (as of now : p), who has a fascinasion with mystery things. actually meeting Kei while he was on a case in her home town. though he only said he was a tourist.
she found out he was a spirit detective by stumbling across a file he was currently working on. being the rather inteligent girl she is, she wouldnt buy into any half baked lies (though somehow believed he worked for a toddler in spirit world o.O'. lol)
tends to be a bit of a tomboy (so much so, she considers herself "one of the guys", with Kei and sol), though is just as girly as any other on the inside.

is the familiar of Kei. though Kei doesnt know why he is. usually to have a creature s a familiar you have to form a pact with the creature on a spiritual level. but kei never remembers doing this
he met whith while on a case once. during the case, Kei found whith floating by weakly, and fall to the ground. taking whith with him, kei found that the one he was after had injured whith terribly. and did everything he could to protect whith. after the case he too whith home to fix him up/nurse him back to health, but decided he'd keep whith with him, cause he seemed pretty attached to kei.
(unknown to kei, whith is actually his spirit beast. while on his test to reclaim his life and save the girl, koenma placed a spirit egg on Kei's person. after the egg obtained Kei's base energy, it was marked as his own from that point on, and koenma took care of the egg. letting it absorb Kei's energy. whith hatched while kei was on the case, and instictivly set off to find him, getting away from koenma. overall its no coinsedince Kei found whith)
