The trees looked like a blur; I wonder how I can run this fast without ramming into trees?
I felt something hit me fast, hard, it would have shattered my bones, if I was human…but I’m not. I was knocked over by the force onto the ground.
“Hey watch where you’re going!”
“Well, I’m sorry sir--” I blushed.
“What is with your clothes!?!” I looked up, his hand was extended, he was looking down at me, anger colored his face. Shoulder length black hair, red t-shirt, pale, looked about to be close to his mid twenties, black jeans, and gray shoes. I took it and stood up, staring into his honey golden eyes, they softened, he quickly shook his head “Come with me,” He grabbed hold of my wrist. I blushed “and stop blushing!” We started running to, god knows where. A house came into view. Brick, four square windows, two bottom, two top. We got closer, red wooden door, one window at the top, peephole, and a brass door handle. We stopped on the porch “Come inside,” He motioned towards the door.
“How if it isn’t open?” He sighed and whispered something, the door opened. On the other side was a man, looked about to be thirty-five, brown short hair, black button-down silk long sleeved shirt, black pants, and black polished shoes, pale, and the same as the man who ran into me, gold eyes. Standing next him was a woman who looked close his age, long blonde hair, blue skinny dress, pale, and silver high heels, her eyes, gold.
“Welcome home, Dolan--” Shock pained his face.
“Who’s your,” She cleared her throat “little friend?” I knew she was talking about me, I blushed. A little girl, looked to be about fifteen, hopped down the stairs in a pixie like way. She approached the man and woman; Kind of long brown hair, purple jacket over a black shirt, jeans, and black converse.
“So, who is this? Wow! You need some new clothes and fast!” She smiled and took hold of my wrist. I looked over at ‘Dolan’, he nodded. I smiled at her. She led me up a grand staircase into a brightly colored room “So, this is my room,” What am I doing here? I saw a open window. I jumped out of it. I heard the girl yell, “Where are you going?” I ignored her and ran, ran to the only place I knew around here. The pond. I walked into it, sat down, put my head in my hands, and started to cry.
I looked at my reflection, blood covered her face, tilted my head up to look at the now dark sky, filled with twinkling stars, and looked back down at the reflection. I heard someone come up behind me, my mussels tightened; I did a back flip, and landed in a attack position. Dolan was standing right in front of me. I gracefully stood up. My pants and shirt dripping water.
“What the hell was that back there?!” He pointed in the direction of his house.
“I was blinded by your beauty before, but now…I could care less,” I made my voice cold.
“But that doesn’t excuse your behavior, young miss,” A voice, that man that answered the door. I heard grass crunching, I looked at the tree, and there he was, leaning against it.
“I was only trying to be nice,” The pixie like girl came out from behind a tree.
“You could have been a little more polite,” The woman stood next to the man.
“Yeah, no one disrespects my family and gets away with it,” A boy came out from the dark; he was using it as a hiding place. Blonde short hair, pale, black tight t-shirt, blue jeans, blue shoes, eyes, gold.
“What is this a freaking family reunion?” I chuckled. “I don’t need you guys, I can survive on my own.”
“You’re on our grounds now; you can’t just go around killing humans like that!” The muscular boy walked towards me.
“Blake stop!” The man yelled. He is the father in the family? He stopped walking, leaving a small space in between us. “She’s a newborn. She was created about,” He sniffed the air “two hours ago. Take it easy on her,” He looked over at me “Do you want to come home with us, to get new clothes? Or do you want to become part of our family, or--”
“You can go on your way and never see us again…” Dolan sighed. He walked close to me. A growl ripped through my clenched teeth.
“Dolan!” Blake yelled. But he kept walking towards me, he grabbed my wrists, I struggled, I looked in his eyes, they were filled with loneliness, then I felt my whole body soften. Fighting with him wouldn’t solve anything right now…
“I want…to become a part of your family, if that’s alright with everyone else…” I smiled.
“Yep. Alright with me!” The pixie like girl piped up.
“I guess…” Blake didn’t sound pleased.
“As long as you treat me like I’m the adult in the house, sure,” The woman is the mother then?
“I’m glad your staying with us,” The man smiled, “but, you have to control your thirst,”
“My what?”
“The burning in your throat,” Exactly when Dolan said ‘burn’ the fire flared back up.
“So its back isn’t it?” I nodded. “Everyone could use a hunting trip, where shall it be this time?” The man was pretty quick.
“Well, since…I didn’t catch your name?” Everyone looked at me. I blushed.
“Inna Crow,” Dolan smiled.
“Well, if you are going to be a part of this family then, you have a choice of two last names Shadow, or Cloud?” The man spoke lightly, waiting for my response.
“Um…Cloud would be fine, Thank you.” I gave him a warm smile.
“Ok, so your sister would be Tina--”
“Who?”
“Oh, my sincerest apologies we haven’t even introduced ourselves yet. My name is Stacy Cloud and I’m your mother.” The older women said and smiled.
“Mine is Tina Cloud!” The pixie like girl smiled at me.
“Mine, as you should know is Blake, Blake Shadow,” He smiled.
“My name is Charlie Shadow, your father from now on,” The older man smiled.
“And last, but not least, as you should already know, is Dolan Shadow,” He smiled at me.
“As I was saying before we got into the whole ‘introduction’ thing was that since Inna is a newborn, we should take her to the mountains. Hardly any humans, and a lot of animals, no one would notice us,” He smiled towards me. Trying to reassure me that he knows what he’s doing.
“Ok, is everyone in agreement?”
“Yep!” Tina’s smile grew bigger.
“Sure, but only for Inna’s sake,” Thomas grinned.
“Yes, for Inna,”
“Ok, its settled. We all take a week long trip to the mountains,”
“We should go back home, the sun is starting to rise,” They all nodded and ran towards ‘home’.
“Be my guest?” Dolan had his hand held out, waiting for me to take it.
“It would be my pleasure,” I smiled and took it. We started running.
“By the way what did you mean about you were ‘blinded by my beauty’” I cleared my throat. “You know that’s not necessary for a vampire to do,” I shot him a evil glare.
“I really didn’t mean…I mean I did…man, what I’m trying to say is I like you, ok?” He stopped. I walked back to him, “What did I say the magic word?”
“So let me get this straight, you like me, and I like you, right?”
“Yes, if that’s how you truly feel,”
“So…do you want to date me?”
“Awkward way of asking me out but…yeah sure,”
“But first,”
“What?”
“No offense…your clothes,” I looked down at them, blood all over my shirt and my pants. I blushed. “Your cute when you blush,” We started running towards the house. I blushed harder. He laughed.
We arrived at the porch of the house.
“I have a idea. Ok, I walk into the house with you in my arms like one of those married humans do. It’ll be fun! You in?” I smiled.
“Why not?”
“Ok,” He smiled and bent over, one arm cradling my back, one behind my calf, “You ready?” I nodded. In this quick swooping motion he cradled me like a newborn baby. I wrapped my arms around his neck, he kicked open the door with a big smile on his face “Look who’s got a girlfriend!” He bragged, I blushed, Blake laughed.
“Who would want to date you, Dj?”
“This beautiful girl I’m holding,”
“Her!?!”
“Dolan let me down,” He put me down.
“Inna what,”
“What do you mean ‘her’? What am I not good enough for him?” I was walking towards him.
“No you’re very beautiful, but,”
“You better not be hitting on my girlfriend!”
“I’m not!” I stopped walking.
“Are you calling,”
“Everyone be quiet!” Charlie walked into the room. He sure has a big voice… “now everyone get ready for bed,” We all nodded. “Inna,” I walked over to him.
“Yes, Charlie?”
“I’m sorry to say but, we don’t have a extra coffin for you to sleep in. Do you mind sharing with someone…Dolan do you want to share with Inna?” He didn’t say anything. Where is he? I looked around, nothing.
“Dolan, I will count to three, if you don’t answer then I’ll have her share with Blake…one…two…”
“Ok!” He ran over to me and put his arms around my waist and smiled “I’ll share,” Where did he come from?
“Ok, Its settled then Dolan shares with Inna,”
“Come on,” His smile grew bigger “I’ll show you my, I mean our room.” We walked upstairs.
“But this is where Tina’s room is?” He laughed.
“Yeah, that’s true but so is mine,” He gave me a smile that looked kind of crooked. It made him look hot. He knocked on the wall five times, a part of it slid to the side.
“Cool…..” My mouth hung open, I closed it. It was pitch black.
“Oh, yeah. Before I forget, Tina come here please,” She appeared next to us.
“What?” She sounded annoyed. She was dressed in her pajamas. Pink tank top and shorts, with duck print.
“Could you let Inna borrow a pair of your pajamas?”
“Sure,” She perked up. “come on!” She walked in front of me, expecting me to follow, I did. We walked into her bright room. Bright pink walls, one window, two dressers, bed, TV, and…another door? She closed the door, walked over to a dresser and shifted through the second drawer down. A few seconds passed, she pulled out a blue silk button down t-shirt, and black silk pants.
“I thought you loved black?”
“I do, but I like pink a little bit too. Here put these on,” She held out a pair of clothes.
“Where should I change?” I took the clothes from her hand.
“Over there,” She pointed over to…a screen? I swear that wasn’t there before.
“Ok,” I walked over to the corner, behind the screen, and shed my bloody clothes.
“Here, throw your clothes over the screen when you have the pajamas on,” I slid the top up my arms and shrugged my shoulders to secure it. I buttoned it up, pulled the pants up to my hips, and threw my old clothes over the screen. I walked out and styled the outfit. “I did a pretty good job if I don’t say so myself!” She smiled, glad with her work. Arms full of clothes.
“Dolan, you can come in now,” I sighed.
“He was here?”
“Yep. The whole time…” I smiled.
“Can I Tina?” Dolan said through the door. She chuckled.
“Sure,” The door opened. Dolan changed clothes. A black t-shirt, and black sweat pants.
“Nice outfit, good work Tina!” She bowed. “Now its time for me and Inna here,” He walked over to me and wrapped his arms around my waist “to go to bed, Goodnight Tina,” He was a little bit taller than me, he had to bend down a little to wrap his arms around my waist.
“Yeah, Goodnight and thank you for the clothes,” I smiled.
“‘Night guys and no prob. Inna!” Dolan and me walked out of the room and walked the opposite way of his room.
“Where are we going?”
“To wash your face,” He smiled. We walked into a very open bathroom. He pulled a black cloth from his right pocket, turned the sink on, wet it, and reached near my face with the cloth.
“Can’t I do it myself?”
“No,”
“Why?”
“Look,” He pointed towards the long mirror that was above the sink. I looked at where I should be…nothing. I squinted at it, I swear I could see a faint trace of my face in it.
“None…” I breathed.
“That’s why,” He started wiping my face.
“But how could I see myself in the reflection of the pond?” He shrugged.
“There we go all clean,” I smiled.
“I’ll believe you,” We walked out of the bathroom, hand in hand. In a few minuets we stopped in front of his secret room. He put his cloth back into his pocket and looked at me “Would you do the honors?”
“How?” I looked up at him, confused.
“Knock five times then it will open.” I knocked five times, the wall slid. I chuckled, still amused. He took a hold of my hand and lead me through, even though I had perfect vision in the dark, it was fun to pretend, only for his sake. A dresser and a bed. He let go of my hand and turned on the light, it was soft but sill shocking, I covered my eyes with my forearm.
“Ow much,” He walked over to me.
“Oh my gosh, I’m sorry, I forgot dull lights hurt newborns,” He embraced me, I embraced him back. Burying my head in his chest to keep the light off my eyes.
“Its ok…” I lifted my head to look at his face and noticed a open medieval type looking door. Well it didn’t look that medieval with light shinning n it “What’s with everybody having a dresser and a closet, plus,” I looked around “where’s your coffin, I kind of want to go to sleep.” I yawned and stretched, still on my knees.
“Come on,” He grabbed my hand, stood up, and switched the light off. I smiled in the darkness. I squeezed his hand, he smiled. We walked through the door, there was a soft dull light from a candle on a small wooden table. In the middle of the room was a black coffin…laying on the floor “Don’t be scared, go on,” I looked at him, he gave me a comforting smile. I slowly walked over to the coffin, measuring every step carefully. I felt his hand still intertwined in mine. It made me more relaxed. I touched it, “Do you want me to,”
“No,” I opened it and gasped. Black blanket, black silk pillow, and a brown teddy bear. It was beautiful, like I always dreamed of when I was a child. “Is the bear,”
“Yours,”
“Oh my gosh! Thank you,” I gave him a tackle hug, he stumbled back, and he wrapped his arms around me.
“Come on,” He sounded pleased with himself, I smiled. He got into the coffin, then I did. I picked up the bear and cuddled with it “Now I feel jealous of the bear…”
“Why?”
“You’re cuddling more with it than you are with me and I’m real,” I hugged him “lets got to bed, sleepyhead,” I laid down, he took hold of the chain, blew the candle out, and lowered the lid. It was a tight fit, our bodies pressed against each other, our hands intertwined. I stared at him and he stared at me, until everything went black with the grip of sleep.
My dream was weird. It was pitch black, there was two lit up faces one was mine but a lot more…demonic. It had a red outlined glow to it. The other one was my boyfriend, the love of my afterlife, Dolan. I looked at him, thoughts were hammered into my head. Don’t drink humans, try to fit in, blend with the humans, were here for peace. I looked over at the demonic one. Again, thoughts hammering. Humans are food, were here for one reason…is to scare the humans, drink whenever you want, The Shadows are not here to help you, their here to destroy everything you stand for. The demonic one had a point. I don’t want to betray the love of my afterlife… “I don’t know! Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!”
My eyes opened, I was on a hard wood floor, Dolan was beside me, holding my hand, squeezing, everything was blue
“Inna, Inna are you ok?”
“What? No, not now!” Why does this have to happen?
“Inna, wake up!” My eyes flew open, Dolan was over me, panic colored his face. I felt beads of sweat collecting on my forehead.
“Huh, what,” I sprung up. “What’s wrong with me?”
“You were screaming.”
“What do you mean?”
“Just now you were screaming ‘What? No, not now!’”
“Oh, you mean my dream. Wait, how do you know about th- oh…”
“What was the dream?”
“…nothing…” He shrugged. Knowing he wouldn’t win.
“You ready to do hunting?” I tried to smile, but the burn. “That’s a yes?” I nodded. “Ok, Then you might want to go over to Tina’s room and ask her for some clothes,”
“Dolan?”
“Yes,”
“Your eyes are blue?”
“So are yours,”
“Why do they turn that color, we aren’t human any more?”
“Thirst, your eyes turn the color of when you were human.”
“Amazing, I’ll be going now,” He waved.
I took my time walking over to Tina’s room. Taking slow steps, feeling my leg mussels tighten with each step forward. I looked at the walls, black and white pictures of people lined them. I reached Tina’s room and knocked on the door “Tina…Tina…You there?” I waited for a few seconds and turned the knob, it opened. “Tina?” I looked everywhere, I passed the ’closet’ door, then backed up.
Maybe…her room is like Dolan’s? I walked towards the door, a hand grabbed my shoulder.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Blake, gosh he really is staring to get on my nerves. I turned around, he looked mad “No one but me goes in there, her boyfriend.”
