Chapter 5: Attack
It was after meal time and Takami’s mind was clouded with indecision. While Chouko was taking a bath, he went outside to the koi fish pond once more in the cool night air. “Grandfather is summoning me…tch that old man can wait. I don’t need to go now.” Takami thought. He walked up to the edge of the pond and looked at the dancing fish. They seemed to glisten and sparkle under the moonlight’s gaze. Takami’s eyes wavered throughout the pond looking at the details of every koi fish and their movements. But then his eyes came across a silver koi that was different from the rest of the fish. “I don’t remember that fish being in the pond,” he questioned himself. He kept observing the fish until he remembered…It wasn’t a fish! Takami jumped back alarmed but ready to fight. The koi fish jumped out of the pond and morphed into a beautiful girl with ivory skin and long silver hair. She had electrifying yellow eyes that glowed like fireflies in the moonlight. Takami sighed with relief and said, “Oh, it’s just you Hitomi. Your morphing ability has gotten better. Has my grandfather sent you, my childhood friend, to come fetch me?” She clicked her tongue at his comment. “What kind of greeting was that? Didn’t you even miss me a tiny bit? I just came to see how you were doing. I heard rumors of you hanging out with cute human girl these past few days.” Hitomi giggled with excitement. “It’s just a human girl that took care of me when my uncle almost killed me and stuffed me in a sack. I’m going to leave her as soon as I get better and get back to my hiding spot in the waterfall.” Hitomi grinned slightly at Takami. “The Takami I knew would be too scared to even be near a presence of a human. Is she really just a human to you? Or is she even more than that?” She circled around while poking him. “Tell me what you really think about her. I’m your best friend you should tell me these things!” Hitomi enticed him. “Well,” Takami started out, “I think she is c-cute and gentle, and I might be in l-” But before Takami finished a needle flew past him and hit the tree behind. “How despicable,” She said while raising more needles towards him, “Falling in love with a human is a bad thing. I’m sorry I lied to Takami-kun. I actually came here to force you to come back to the main house. Your grandfather captured my whole clan and made us his dogs in order to search for you. People from my clan or any other person working under him are dying Takami! You must come back to your grandfather now!” Hitomi then threw more needles full of her burning rage.

Back at the shrine, Chouko was done with her bath and went to her room to change. After she changed into a fresh kimono, she went out to search for Takami. Chouko looked in places where he might have been: the kitchen, her grandfather’s collection of scrolls containing information about medicine and other useful things, and into the hallways sometimes playing with the servants. But he was no where to be seen. Chouko began to panic and search even faster all around the shrine, yelling Takami’s name until her throat went dry. She circled around the halls panting heavily from running, until she found her grandfather outside looking at the full moon. “Grandfather, have you seen where the fox went?” Chouko said as her forehead was collecting drops of sweat. “Ah, the little fox? I saw him go into the garden. He had worry clouding his eyes the last time I saw him. “Thank you very much grandfather!” Chouko called out to him as she ran towards Takami’s location. Her feet tripped over twigs and rocks and her hands trembled. She went through the twisting and turning pathways through the garden getting closer to the pond. Her legs finally gave away when her foot hit a tree root. Chouko fell on the ground face down panting. After a few seconds of resting, she staggered to her feet and put her hand on the tree’s trunk. But her hand jolted back in pain. She looked and saw a silver needle stuck inside the tree. Her pierced hand started to bleed but she carried on with sweat dripping off her forehead. “What has happened here? Its like a battle has taken place,” she thought worriedly. As her shaking feet kept moving she started to hear trickling water. With hope in her heart, she quickened her pace. When she reached the end of the bushes she smiled. But that smile soon turned into a grotesque shock when she saw the wounded Takami in the pond. He was in his human form worn and cut. His blood filled the water covering the reflection of the moon.
