Chapter 1: Strange Encounters
Blooming Chrysalis
Far when the mankind started to walk upon the surface, Earth was nothing. That was then the gods decided to breathe life into this lifeless rock. They carved into the Earth’s crust making it into a piece of art. The sands of time began to fall and life started to grow. The gods lived with the mortals harmoniously as their leaders. The mortals cherish and loved the gods who gave them life. But as time passed the gods debated and fought into whom would become the true and only leader. The war between these powerful gods ruined the once peaceful times and formed into a world of chaos. One by one the gods destroyed each other. It was then the demons arose from the ashes. Born from the god’s selfish desires, the demons came to Earth causing havoc. Back in the heavens while the wars in both realms continued, the wounded God Tsuki-Yomi fled to earth. Tsuki-Yomi became the moon to sacrifice him in order to stop the bitter wars. As soon they saw the once white moon bloom a sorrowful red, they stopped. All beings alike shed tears for the moon god’s unfortunate death. It was then that they decided a truce and set aside their differences. They continued their lives separately as time continued on.

Chapter one: Stranger Encounters

“Where in the heavens is Chouko-sama?!” yelled Junko, “The sun is already risen high and its time for lessons!” Junko, Chouko’s teacher, was already at the limit of her patience. She sighed heavily and sat down on her cushion. “I’m too old for this,” Junko said as she poured a cup of tea for her self. While sipping her tea quietly she looked outside at the tree leaves rustling and the village children laughing under the tree. “How peaceful, spring has finally come,” Junko thought. But suddenly she heard the sliding door open and dropped her tea cup. Before it crashed on the tatami mat she caught it. Puzzled Junko looked up and saw the panting Chouko by the door securing the door. Her hair was out of place with leaves sticking out, and her obi sash was poorly tied. “Chouko-sama!” she yelled. Chouko jumped up in the air from the sudden voice behind her. “J-J-Junko sensei!” Chouko stuttered. She smiled crookedly and said, “Um, I’m very sorry sensei that I am late, I was helping the village children!” “Chouko-sama please refrain yourself to not be late to my lessons! You are already 17 years old!” Junko sighed, “But come now, let us have some tea together before we get you washed up.” Chouko blushed and walked over to Junko obediently. Junko poured Chouko a cup of tea and handed it to her.

“Thank you very much Junko-sensei!” Chouko said and bowed. Chouko got up from her seat and began to walk to the exit of her house when Junko called out to her and said “Don’t be late the next time for lessons or you’ll bathe in the cold waterfall!”

While Chouko was walking down the path a fresh breeze of air blew into the sakura blossoms. She smiled and yelled “Welcome back Spring!” She twirled and danced under the falling petals grinning big. While she twirled she saw a dark shadow coming fast through the trees. “What was that?” she thought. But then her thoughts became interrupted when she bumps into something and heard a quick shriek. She stopped and looked it was her best friend on the floor surprised. “Chinatsu-chan! I’m sorry I was so happy that I didn’t see you there!” Chouko said quickly. “That’s ok Chouko-chan. I know you love Spring very much!” Chinatsu said happily. “So anything new?” Chouko asked. “Well from what I heard from the other villagers, there is going to be a spring festival tomorrow night!” She said gleefully. Chouko opened her eyes wide. “WOW! They are going to have a spring festival?” Chouko said excitedly. “Yes! They are going to be so many booths, carts, and people there!” Chinatsu replied. “I wonder if I should wear that kimono to the festival.” Chouko mumbled to herself. “What did you say Chouko-chan? Chinatsu asked. “Oh nothing,” giggled Chouko.

Chouko continued to walk down the path to the hill where the shrine she lived in was. She knew that her grandfather, the head monk, was waiting for her at the front entrance with a plate full of rice cakes and giant grin saying ‘welcome home’. But when she reached the foot of the hill, she realized that she was very thirsty so skipped to the well on the side of the hill. When she reached the well she took the handle and she began cranking it. She noticed that the bucket seemed heavier than usual. “Hmm. There must be a rock in the bucket!” She said. So she continued to crank and when it finally reached the top, she gasped. There was a bag with something moving inside, trying to get out of the bag. “How unfortunate! Someone has put an animal inside this bag!” Chouko cried. She took out the bag from the bucket and held it in her arms. The creature inside moved even more restless inside the bag shocked from her actions. “Don’t struggle, its ok,” she said while patting its head. Chouko placed the bag on the dirt road and untied the bag revealing a wounded fox. The fox was trembling as it looked at Chouko. She saw cuts, bruises, and a sprained paw. “Aww, I wonder what has happened to you,” Chouko said while petting its head. She wrapped the bag around the trembling fox and started to walk up the stairs. The once trembling fox became calm and slept in her arms. She giggled and kissed it lightly on the nose as she kept walking up the fleet of stairs.
