I wanted to reply to this thread again without actually bumping it back up as it seems to have died.

Now firstly, I'm new at modding. I've been doing it for a couple of months now (nearly 3) and so my experiences are limited.

That being said, I've left my online light on for the last day or so. It's been interesting as in this little amount of time, I was right. Every few minutes I get another PM from someone. That's fine, but they're almost all things that should have been asked in the Q&A. What's happened here is the stuff I've been working on (such as clearing the music forum queues) has been interrupted to explain to people why the old avi arenas are no longer accepting entries.

It's been a day and already the PMs have overwhelmed me. At this rate I wont make it to four months as a mod.

Honestly, I don't see the need to appear online to satisfy the need to see the online light. That's not what I'm supposed to be doing on Gaia. Answering PMs on how to place a bid is not what I'm supposed to do on Gaia. I'm not the helpdesk or technical support, none of us are.

We're unpaid (yes, unpaid. Moderating on Gaia does not contribute to my living costs, study fees, food costs and ectera) workers who deal with reports and moderate the forum.

There is almost no need to be PMing an online moderator, use the report system that already exists.

And to the lovely people who basically said that being a mod means you had no right to have fun on Gaia, I don't even know how to respond to you. Your attitude is terrible and I hope one day you learn that you can't treat people like that.

@Q&A - Stop using "PM a mod" as your default answer. Stop it.

EDIT: It's been a few days now, and I kept it on. Sorry, but I'm turning it off. These last couple of days I've been busy and couldn't answer all PMs I got. I just counted, I've got 59 unread PMs which I need to look at when I get a chance. That time could be better spent on other things.

Experiment is over, my online light is back to friends-only. At the rate it was going I couldn't keep up.

It would be awesome if Gaia knew when to not PM a mod, as nearly all of those PMs I've gotten were suited for the Q&A or elsewhere. If Gaia knew when not to PM a mod then we could appear online. But Gaia doesn't, and so I'm back to hiding.

It's either hiding or burning out and stepping down, and I don't want to step down.

Perhaps a nice quick-change of online status would be useful here. When you're active and ready to handle an immediate situation, you could flip your on your light real quick'n simple.

Course, I don't know how immediately that status can get updated. Maybe Gaia can pull it off for the mods! Goooo Gaia!

It sounds nice, but I'm a cynic. I personally feel that anyone seeing any indication of a mod being online, even if it says "busy" or something else, would immediately PM them rather than an offline one.

In the end there's really one or two things that need PMing anyway.
