Memoirs of a Gaian: Part 2
Cir's encountered a lot of people who refer to "new Gaia" and "old Gaia", and neither one of us can figure out what they're talking about. There have been too many small changes for both of us. ^_^;; I think a whole lot of that stems from the fact that we both have ADD with our hobbies. I tend to come and go from Gaia. I'll get on a Gaia kick, then it'll fade and I'll be gone for a few months. So over the years Gaia has changed a lot, but it's all seemed like little silent things.
After a month or two doing something else, I'd come back to the site and find new things added and old things gone. Stuff like personals, the link directory, and the ability to search the forums vanished without a trace.
Everyone who's been here a year or more has noticed that Gaia's been placating the newbies more and more, and I'm no exception. As I said before, I was tossed onto Gaia in my underwear. I was here when houses were first released; You had to buy them for 1000 gold and I remember people complaining that furniture was too expensive and they could only afford the Makeshift stuff. Now newbies get a whole wardrobe, a free house with a nice set of furniture, and free fishing gear. :/ That's been the biggest change of all, I think. The amount of goods that the newbies get.
I'm not opposed to starting people off with things, but I think it's gotten out of hand with the *quality* of stuff they have. Things I had to pay for are given away for free, the starter furniture is really nice looking, and the new newbie clothes are so cute that I'M wearing them. I don't have anything against giving stuff to new people, but I rather liked the idea getting peasant clothes and only being able to afford makeshift furniture. You have enough to use, but it makes you want to work harder to get nice things, and you're proud of the things that you worked hard to get. And if you want to work and get nice things, you spend time on Gaia. I think that's my issue with all the newbie stuff... Giving them nice things right away gives them no incentive to hang around and play on the site. It's like saying they don't care if you sign up, poke around for five minutes, and leave.
This whole thing started out as a record of memories, and ended up as a rant. Sorry about that. ^_^;;
