Ch1. When I first arrived at Applenut, I immediately thought “I’m going to die here in this shack!" After all, I was only there because my mother wanted us to have some “special bonding" time, even though I clearly explained to her that I could bond just as well, and maybe even better, at the beach. But my mother was not to be phased, she just shook her head and said “Saria, you don't need any more sun, your practically an apple already. What we need is some time in the country, just you and me." Well, there I stood, looking at boring Applenut manor. It looked like most colonial houses, and yet, though I didn't notice it then, there was something creepy about the house. The kind of creepy you get when a blind man tries to garden the grounds, and when the wrinkly old Innkeeper, decides not to dust out the cobwebs and clean the windows. I knew right then that this was going to be a long summer. My mother and I were the last guest to arrive for that summer. There were six bedrooms, not counting The Innkeeper's or the Gardener's. We walked into the kitchen and met the first of the five other guests staying at the Inn. A thin woman was sitting at the table. She wore a summer dress with no sleeves, and it looked slightly large on her. She was pretty, but that was about it. She wasn't beautiful like most women in stories are, but just plain. I'm not saying she was ugly, but she wasn't beautiful either. When we walked in, she got up and introduced her self. “Hi, my name's Candace, Candy for short. I'm staying here all summer so that I can relax and get away from my boyfriend. He's what you would call the clingy type." I smiled and told Candy my name, and then I turned my attention to the other person in the room. He was a tall man, going bald, and all around scary looking. His name, as he told us in a hollow voice, was Drake La Moreia. He said nothing when my mother and I introduced our selves, and even afterward, when Mrs. Josey Dot came to greet us. "Welcome to my humble home you're that last guests to arrive, so your room will be the last one on the right." Mrs. Dot handed my mother a key and then looked at Candy. "The piano has been tuned, and you are aloud to play it, dear." Candy looked up and smiled. "Thank you, Dot. I love playing so much; I wasn't sure how I would manage without it for the whole summer." Candy then exited the room. After a few moments, the sound of the piano could be heard. Candy was wonderful, and as she played a slow, mournful song, I thought about the condition of the house, and of Drake. Those three things fit together, all right. My mother led me upstairs, and into a long, dark hallway. There were four doors on the right, and four doors on the left. We walked down the long hall, passing each of the doors, and looking curiously at each one. Above each door was a message of some sort, written in a language I'd never heard nor seen before. As we came to the second to last door on the right, the door opened, and a tall, young boy a few years older than me walked out. He stopped, smiled at my mother, looked at me, made either a confused face, or a surprised face, and then said " Hello, my name is Allen, and I work here as the gardener for Dot. She's my aunt." Then, he glanced once more at me, and this time I stared coldly back. Allen's face turned red and he hurried away. I felt awful, I had just scared a guy! Well I could certainly say that I wouldn't be seeing him any more.
