Autumn woke up from another feverish dream in her four-poster bed in White Silk mansion. Determined to clear her mind of another dream of shadowed, calling figures, she dressed quickly in her favorite leggings and light yellow dress. Quickly tying up her hair, she glanced at the clock. 8:00. Leila would be up. The sassy French cook would definitely apprehend her on the way out to the courtyard, and she couldn't waste time trying to dodge her. As long as there aren't crepes for breakfast, I'll be safe., she thought. Autumn sighed and wove through the hallways, making her way towards the courtyard. Strangely, Leila wasn't there to redirect her towards the kitchen. She shrugged it off and broke through the French doors out into the courtyard. She sat on a white marble bench and closed her eyes. Usually she had to block out sounds of the house waking up, but today there were none. She forgot about it and listened to the wind in the leaves. It was the first day of fall, her birthday. She figured everyone else was getting things ready for it, and didn't wonder about the silence of the house. Sure enough, when she returned inside, Leila was there. "Where do you sink you are going?" she demanded. "Um, up to my room?" Autumn said meekly. "Wrong! You are seeting down now at ze table, are you not?" Leila guided her to a chair. "Eet eez your anniversaire, your birthday and I have made a fresh batch of crepes for you." Autumn groaned inwardly. Now she'd never get away from the table. Leila placed a plate of thin, hot crepes in front of her. Autumn sighed. "I'm really not hungry..." Leila threw up her hands. "Fine! Go up stairs to you're room. It obviously not matter to you zat I spend all my time in keetchen making meals no one eat!" Autumn escaped from the table as soon as Leila went into the kitchen muttering something about "Ingrateful peeg americans...no respect..." Autumn ran up the stairs, brushing past Nelly, one of the twin maids. She flopped on her bed and cracked open The Secret Garden. Half an hour later, there was a knock on the door. Cora, her 'aunt' peeked in. "Can I come in?" "Yes," Autumn said, not looking up from her book. Cora entered the room with Saffron, Autumn's other 'aunt'. "Happy Birthday, Autumn." Saffron said. "How's it feel to be 15?" asked Cora. Autumn sighed. "I don't know. No different, I guess. Can I go back to reading now?" Her aunts nodded and left the room. Autumn kept reading, wondering, Why'd they ask? They've never done that before...
