CHAPTER 2
Fortunately, my class is at the end of the hall. So I slipped out of the back door and into the courtyard. This was risky because there were many windows through which a nosy teacher could spot me. But at this point, I could care less.
I wandered until I came to the pond. A friend of mine "fell" in once and told me it was only about 2-4 feet deep. Then, I saw her! There was a girl face down, half in half out of the pond. I dashed over and pulled her out. She got up on her hands and knees and coughed up a lot of water.
She fell again but this time on her back. She was sprawled out and was breathing heavily. She sat up and I asked, "You okay?" She gave me no answer. I gave her my extra shirt and she began to dry off. First her legs, then arms. She rung it out and started to dry her hair.
I asked again, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine! Thank you very much!" she said with a smile. She handed me my shirt but I said she could keep it.
"Who are you?" I asked sitting up on my knees.
She did the same and replied, "Me? I'm...um...Cindi! Yeah! My name's Cindi!" she sounded a little nervous.
"Well, I'm Brandon!" I said. "Hey, how'd you end up in the pond anyway?" I wondered.
"I must have landed here! Then you came and saved me! Thank you again!" she said with a giggle.
"You're very welcome!" I said with a bit of a laugh myself. I had another question. "What do mean 'landed'?"
"Well," she began. "I fell out of what you might call a ship!" she explained. Even with that I wasn't catching on at all! She was gonna have to give me a better answer! I stayed patient though.
"Where are you from" I asked again. I know it seems like I'm asking too many questions but she interests me! At least I'm not talking about myself the whole time!
"I can't tell you!"
"Why not?"
"If I do my people will...execute me!"
"Execute?!"
"Yes!" she confirmed. I finally got it!
"You're not from Earth are you?" I asked.
"No," Cindi answered shaking her head. The bell rang.
"Oh no!" I groaned. I put a hand to my head. "Come on!" I said grabbing her hand. I made a break for the door I came out in.
"Wh-What? What's wrong?" Cindi asked.
We made it inside and I stayed against the wall. "This is not a good day right now! OK, I have series of tests I'm not ready for! But if I want to get out of here, I have to take them!" I explained. "Plus, we're late! So come on!"
I noticed she was barefoot. So I gave her my socks. As we made our way down the hall, my teacher spotted me. This was Mr. Herron. He was tall and skinny and had a big bald spot on the top of his head. I felt Cindi's hand gripping the back of my shirt but I dare not look behind me.
"Brandon? What are you doing?" he asked. Who's asking questions now? "I was in the bathroom!" I said quickly. "Nice! The bathroom! Smooth!" I thought to myself sarcastically.
"Well hurry and get to class before you miss your finals!" he said with a sigh.
He walk towards me and i began to jog down the hall. I got to the staira and Cindi appeared at my side. "Why didn't he see you?" I asked.
"I was scared so I disappeared!" she answered.
"You can turn invisible?!" I asked.
"Only when I'm afraid!" she admitted.
I didn't think it was bad at all! Only the scared part messed me up. I finally made it to Algerbra and the teacher instructed me to sit in the back. Cindi sat in an empty desk (invisibly) next to me. I finished and slowly got up to give up my test but a girl named Lynzey was nice enough to do it for me this time.
With my new friend by my side, I got into Literature. This time she didn't follow me in. I told her she could stay in the girls bathroom until she saw everyone else coming out. This test was a lot longer. But I seemed to breeze through it. I remembered a lot more than I thought!
Before we left, we all had to turn in our Gym finals. Technically it was a health assignment. I fought my way through and dropped it in the box labeled, "Period 4". We finnally got back to each other and she stayed visible simply because of the crowd. The buses were waiting. So I said my last good-byes and got on the bus. Cindi and I made up a story that we just met and didn't know each other. The others on the bus were getting suspicious. We also shared a seat. But I didn't mind.
