Newb =/= Noob
Gaia is pretty unique. Being so, it also has its own unique terms.
Today's lecture will be on the differences between noob and newb.

Noob - Annoying or irritating person.
On Gaia noob is generally some annoying person. They can be a flamer, a troll, a spammer or just someone who really bugs you.
It is up to personal perception really. However one point still stands, a noob does not have to be new! There are many people who have been members for ages and are still noobs.

Newb - New person to the website.
Here newb means newbie. A new person is not automatically a noob. They are independent of each other. A person can be one or the other.
How long a person stays a newb is also a matter for debate. Some put a set time limit on it, while others feel it depends on experience.
Personally I say someone is a newb until they are comfortable around the website and pretty much know what is going on.

Remember, Gaia has different meanings for them. Don't assume just because noob = newb in general internet that it applies here. Noob is an insult, Newb is a fact.

I hope you remember those points before calling someone a noob. Remember, we were all newbs once, but not all of us were noobs.

Oh and before you flame someone by calling them a noob, you're being a noob yourself.

EDIT: Just incase anyone was confused, =/= (≠) is a term meaning not equals to. It is also known as != in programming language. The opposite of =.

EDIT EDIT: I forgot to mention, don't judge a person's noob level by their avatar. Avatars can be easily changed, so poor items doesn't mean the person is new, and it absolutely doesn't mean they're a noob.

Just wanted to say that the noob/newb term is pretty much used on any MMORPG

So true. Unfortunately almost 90% of the gamer/Gaia population cant be assed to differentiate the two, and just lump the two together, simply because its just 3 keys. N o b. Or N 0 b. I cant tell you the amount of times Ive been called a noob when I was a newb to begin with neutral

Good entry 3nodding

@Raid: Yeah. I don't actually play MMORPGs so I wouldn't know. I just know on my travels around gaia I find many who don't know the gaia meaning of the words lol.

Yay Vaught!

Bravo to Leo!
..heh, that rhythms

I think you're right about how it takes to not be a newbie. In some ways, I think lot of us are still in our newbie phases, still figuring out the little things and that sort of thing. (Me included.)

It really grinds my gears when people make fun of newbies too. Calling them "noob" and whatnot. >>; "Don't make fun of the newbies, dude. You were one once too."

*coughstopsblabberingon* Anyways, bravo on the entry, Leo. ^^

Well.. As to how n00b became to such an insult such as that.. I honestly don't know.. but..

Noob was originally just another way of saying Newbie or Newb except it was generally used in a derogatory manner to indicate uselessness because of the ignorance associated with being a newcomer.

That's just a bit of history for ya.

@urelic: That's how insults start. They get a derogatory connotation, and then people just remember the insulting part of the meaning and BAM, the word is officially offensive.
It can happen to any word. Look at "Gay". I personally find it offensive when people use it to mean something that is crappy. Its (Could be unintentionally) associating the current meaning as being something bad.
But that's away from the point.

I suppose the same happens in reverse. Damn used to be a swear word. It has pretty much lost meaning now.

Person 1: Man, thats so gay! <--- Notice they use the shift key lol
Me: Its so happy? How so?
Person 1: No I mean gay! Are you deft?
Me: No, you're just grammatically incorrect.

Me: LOL, Neanderthal.
