My alarm clock rings annoyingly and I get up. I stretch and open the curtains to greet the morning sun.
Mimi gets up and says “Good morning,” with a smile.
“Good morning,” I say with a smile as big as hers.
We brush our teeth, wash up, and get dressed. We have to hurry because the school is on the other side of town and we have to walk. I look at the clock.
“Mimi come on its 7:45!”I scream sticking a cinnamon roll in my mouth and running out the door.
Mimi grabs her backpack and I grab mine. We ran down the street as fast as we can. Corner after corner we run around. I turn my head to see if she isn’t far behind. I keep running as I look back. I turn the corner and run into someone. Smack!
“Ouch!” I yell.
As I lay on the ground I pick up my backpack. When I looked up to saw who I ran into. I see a boy with his backpack. He looks about my age but I don’t really care right now.
I get on my feet and say “Sorry are you ok?”
I wait for a reply. It looks like he is surprised at something but I don’t know what.
“Hello?” I say as I wave my hand in his face.
He keeps staring.
I walk pass him and say “Ok bye.” I start to run again.
“Hey wait!” the boy screams running to me. I stop and say “Yeah? What is it?”
“I didn’t catch your name.” he says.
I think to myself “How can you catch it? You didn’t even start a conversation.”
“Oh well my name is Kimiko” I say with a smile. “That’s a nice name.” he says.
“Thanks.” I say “I better to go school is about to start.”
“I hope I see you again, wait you don’t know my name it’s-” he says.
Before he is able to say his name the school bell rings.
“Sorry I have to go!” I say running to school.
I meet Mimi on the front steps. “Where have you been?” she says.
“I ran into some guy wanting to start at chat with me just about when school is about to start,” I say walking inside.
“Was he cute?” she says getting a sparkle in her eye.
I stare flatly at her saying “Is that all you care about is how they look?”
“Maybe,” she says. We laugh.
Mamimi looks for our room. We walk up the stairs and walk into our room. We see everyone is sitting down talking. Mamimi and I find a seat across from each other. Our teacher doesn’t seem to be here yet so I sit back and listen to everyone talk. Behind me it sounds like someone is talking about me. Before I know it, a boy has a video camera and points it at me.
“Weird,” I think.
I turn and the boys stop talking. I give them a suspicious look.
“What’s with the video camera?” I ask one of them. He gets nervous and says “Don’t ask me ask Shin!”
“And who is Shin?” I say.
The boys quickly point at someone sitting by me. I turn around and see it’s the boy I ran into earlier today! “Oh great” I think.
“So you’re Shin,” I say “somehow I’m not surprised.”
“Yeah right! How can this be such a coincidence!?!” I think.
I turn back around. I look and the boy still has the video camera.
I bang him on the head and say “Put that thing away!”
The boy wobbles around with a big bump on his head and faints to the floor.
Then, I hear Shin’s light laugh and I turn. Shin is sitting in his seat cracking up.
Soon we hear a car horn coming from the front windows.
“Our teachers here!” someone screams.
All the boys run over to the window and start talking all at once.
“What is the big deal?” a girl and I say at the same time.
When our teacher walks in the classroom and everyone sits down.
My teacher says “Ok everybody be quiet and listen up! My name is Missato I’m your teacher this year and no one is going to be lame and make me mad or you can keep me happy and this can be the best school year you can think of!”
Everyone smiles and clap their hands except me and Mamimi.
Missato says “Ok would the two lady’s new here come up for a sec?”
Me and Mamimi stand up and walk to the front of the classroom.
“Ok introduce yourselves,” Missato tells us.
“My name is Mimi!” she says.
“And I’m Kimi!” I say.
“And we’re cousins!” we in unison.
“Kimi has moved from China and we should be very happy for her” Missato says. Shin smiles.
“Wait a sec you’re the one Shin ran into today!?” a girl screams standing up.
“Amy sit down. You’re always mad when some girl hangs with Shin” another girl says.
“Yeah like you’re his girlfriend or something!” a boy says from the back.
“I’m sorry, but I have nooo idea what you’re talking about,” I say winking at Shin and he laughs again.
“Ok Amy cut it out,” Teri says.
“No let them argue I want to see how this ends.” Missato says sitting back in her chair.
I sigh and say “Not like u own him or something,”
“What was that!?” she says
“Nooothing,” I say with an innocent look on my face sitting at my seat.
Mamimi sits down and Amy cools off. I look at Shin and he has a chuckling look on his face. Then suddenly we both burst out laughing.
“Also Shin is new here he transferred so lets be happy for him too.” Missato says. I look at Shin and now he looks scared. HOW WIERD CAN YOU GET?! FIRST HE’S BURSTING OUT LAUGHING NOW HE’S AS QUIET AS A MOUSE!!
After class I walk around looking for Shin I turn the corner and see some guy beating Shin up! I run that way and yell “Hey what are you doing?!”
“None on of your business!” the guy yells. I pull on the guy’s arm and say “Leave him alone!” The guy pushes me off and says “Back off!” I fall on the ground and start to get mad. I get up and say “I said leave him alone!”
Then I punched him in the nose! The guy falls and runs off scared.
I knell by Shin and say “Are you ok? Why was that guy beating u up like that?” I help Shin up and he says “I’m fine thanks for helping me. That guy was the bully at our school he beats up all the new kids that come to this school.” I lean by a wall and say “Well why did he beat up u and not me?”
He says “Because you’re a girl and he doesn’t pick on pretty girls like you”
I look at him a little confused.
He starts to sweat and say “I mean uh he just doesn’t like to pick on girls because uh…”
I giggle and say “I get it Shin I’ll see you later.”
I walk down the sidewalk then suddenly a car comes around corner behind me and come straight to me!
“Look out!” Shin yells pushing me out the way.
The car stop and I breathe with relief. The car door open and it turns out to be my teacher!
“Kimi where’s your cousin?” she says.
“She’s at home.” I say looking freaked out.
“YOU WERE ABOUT TO RUN ME OVER AND ALL YOU CAN SAY IS ‘WHERE’S YOUR COUSIN’?!?” I thought.
“Ok oh and one more thing I need you and Shin to meet me at the bridge at 5:00 sharp!” she says rushing off in her car.
Shin’s papers fly everywhere and I help him pick them up. When I pick up one of his papers I start to read it because it looks like a letter.
“Don’t read that!” Shin yells reaching for it.
I move the paper away from him and say “Why not? It’s not like it’s about me or anything.”
Shin blushes and covers his face. I get curious and read the paper carefully,
‘Dear journal,
It’s the first day of school and I am so stressed out. I ran into this beautiful girl today. She had hair as black as the night sky and skin as white as the moon. I found out that she is in my class and I am so glad she is. She looks more beautiful the second time I looked at her.’
I smile blushing slightly and say “That’s so sweet.”
I put Shin’s paper back in his backpack and stand up.
“Come on we have to be at the bridge at 5:00 remember” I say. “Oh right.” Shin says getting up.
I walk down the sidewalk and think about that paper. Shin runs up behind me and we walk to the bridge. I didn’t know why Missato wanted to talk to us but when I found out I didn’t want to know.
