WHEN DID WE GROW UP?
you and i were once magicians,
blasting our way through war filled lands,
healing the sick and wounded with out mystical might.
we were once warriors,
fighting the good fight,
keeping the peace at whatever cost came.
we were once dragons,
belching out flame and fire
toasting knights like marshmallows,
and hoarding treasure like we had all the ages before us to live through.
we were once mermaids,
swimming the sea in careless abandon,
stringing pearls, and making combs from coral,
singing sweetly to lure poor sailors to our watery beds.
we were once children,
alive with the color and wisdom of imagination,
with the power to be anyone, anything, we wanted.
we were once alive with the beauty of hope,
and unconditional love,
ready to hug anyone, even a stranger.
alas,
when was the day when we forgot we were gods-
the architects of our own private worlds?
when was that dreaded hour
when we cast aside our cloaks,
and our paper crowns,
and lost our hope to be something more than the world could ask for?
when was it the we grew up?
