Based off.. Well, a tad more than 'based'- the idea came from Evanna Lynch, don't want to tell it to you yet 'cause it'll spoil it... but I loved it, am writing a fanfiction, and will probably be posting in peices, I ought to be done by Friday at which time I'm sending it to Evanna along with some fan art. Yay me! biggrin
p.s.- I'm sure I have lots of details wrong because I'm not that nerdy, so if you notice something wrong, let me know. 3nodding I'll fix it!
The students gasped and ducked as lightning bolts boomed above their heads, emmitted from the ceiling; a storm was raging outside, and the rooftops of hogwarts were mimicking it. Shouts for the headmaster began coming from the rippling sea of students as they rose and fell, avoiding the flashing streaks of light. Eventually Dumbledore entered the great hall, a streak of his wand was seen, and the storm was instantly calmed. He hushed the students, and they immediately regained their positions at their house tables.
Dumbledore made his way between the tables of Gryffindor and Slytherin up to his post, the students falling silent as he passed them; He stood in front of his place as headmaster, poured himself a glass of pumpkin juice, and while raising it to the students, said 'And now the sorting may begin.' Applause errupted in the hall, though it was simply as a sign that the sooner it began, the sooner they might eat.
The first years began to file into the hall, in alphabetical order, awaiting their name to be called while nervously whispering to one another. With the first name called, the sorting began. As the line of first years began to decrease, one in particular caught the headmasters eyes- Long blonde hair, her wand tucked behind her ear, a pair of Raddish earring, and most peculiarly, an out-to-lunch expression on her face. It was like he was being returned to a dream, locked deep within his memory bank; and he began to ignore the houses called for the other children, waiting for this girl's name to be called;
He took another drink of his pumpkin juice.
"Luna Lovegood"
It stuck in his throat, and he silently choked on the juice for a moment before it went down freely, catching only a small amount in his lungs. He was able to hemm humm the liquid out while gathering attention from only a few students, Luna regrettably being one of them.
It felt like hours before the feast was over, and Dumbledore could finally speak with her. He sought her out in the halls, stopping her by placing his hands on her shoulders. Her eyes were so familiar to him. "Luna.." He said.
The girl smiled, and said, "Hello."
"Luna, it's been so long.. How did you..?"
"I'm sorry?" The girls expression hardly changed, though she did tilt her head slightly to the side. "I don't believe we've met. Unless..."
Dumbledore's heart sank for a moment, but then rose as he said "Unless what?"
"I seem to have a swarm of nargles following around." she leaned in slightly towards him "They've befriended the boggarts, you know... They could have taken my shape and introduced us."
Dumbledore paused for a moment, waiting for her to say something else. When he was about to leave, she said, "I'm not your worst fear, am I?" The expression on her face still had not changed since the origional 'hello'.
His hands fell from her shoulders as he said, "Not at all." With that, he turned around and began walking away.
Luna's expression finally softened, and she called after him, "I liked the pudding."
Dumbledore paused, and without turning around, said, "I'm glad you enjoyed it."
[Just for the sake of making sure you know, skipping to Luna's fourth year!]
"Luna, aren't you going to study for your owls?" Cho asked her, pulling her Defense against the Dark Arts books from her bookbag. "You know, Defense against the Dark Arts is just tommarrow- you might want to make sure you're prepared."
Luna lowered the Quibbler she was looking at, glanced back up at Cho, and said, "Yes, I'm prepared." before returning back to the article she was reading and a mysterious relationship between the Mermaids and Giant Squids of the Hogwarts lakes.
Cho nodded, shifting her eyes as she said, "Right."
"This article's interesting; you ought to read it sometime, Cho." She wated for a nod from Cho before saying, "Well, I'm a bit tired now. I think I'll go to bed." She folded the Quibbler, smiled, and left the Ravenclaw common room, skipping up the stairs to her dorm.
Luna knelt down towards her trunk and opened it, looking for pajama's; she thought she heard something fall, so she pulled the box away from the bed, where a small envelope had slipped behind her trunk.
"Where did you come from?" She wondered aloud, picking up the envelope; she felt something heavy inside of it, almost like a large ring. She carefully opened the envelope, and lifted a mysterious necklace; "I think I've seen something like this before in Dad's magzine..." she said, picking it up to look at the many rings surrounding a smal hourglass. "A time turner..."
She checked the inside of the envelope again, looking for a letter or some kind of explanation as to why someone would give her this- but there was nothing.
She knew well how to us a time turner, and for any questions she had, she needed only to check her most recent copy of The Quibbler and double check how to use it. She was nearly immediately tempted to use it on impulse, or at least to show her father- but she knew she would only muck things up if she made a decision without seriously thinking about it. So instead, she pocketed the necklace and lay on her bed, considering what she could do. Of course there were the obvious things she could use it for- it would be much easier for her to find a crumple horned snorkack if she were to turn time back to a point where they were more common- she could use it to see her mother again, or to linger in the cherished moments she had in her life. She knew if her father was aware of her newfounded treasure, he might like to find the Deathly Hallows- but Luna knew better, that a search of such could only end in disaster.
She sighed as she continued contemplation- she had always dreamed of some miraculous thing such as this to happen, and had always hoped she would just be blessed with the wisdom as what to do with it. But now she came up with nothing. She decided she would allow herself to sleep on it- so she rolled over in bed and changed her thoughts to more soothing ones, of Dumbledore's Army and the friends she had found there. A glowing blue rabbit swirling around the room was the last image to leap across her mind before she drifted asleep.
