a little brown book
finding the life of Alexander Shaw, a kind of serial story.
Edward had crossed the lines of the circle, and now stood beside the incubus.
"I... I ... I summoned it."
"What did you intend to do with it?" Henry demanded. I was rooting in my pockets, as a while before that I had put a spell for resisting glamors and bedazzlement on my pocket handkerchief.
"Think, Henry." I snapped. "What do most people do with an incubus?"
"Ah uh" Henry stammered. "Did you miss-summon? I mean surely you wanted a succubus..."
The incubus laughed, and I clutched at the handkerchief. It was possibly the most sexual sound I had ever heard.

I was not a blushing virgin at this point, I feel impelled to point out. I knew my way about the bedroom, and even I should like to think, had some experience in making ladies happy there. Henry, I knew had visited discreet catteries in various parts of town. So it wasn't from the experience of a romantic youth that I spoke.
To put it in more modern terms- the incubus was creepy.

Henry still looked confused, but Edward had sat down on the floor.
"I don't know why I wanted to tell you." he said, looking tiered and a trifle miserable. "But I had to, I did. But it's just that..." the incubus chose that moment to run a hand down Edward's thigh and he trailed off.
"Come now!" I said, taking a step towards the circle. "Stop that!"
"Why should I?" asked the incubus speaking for the first time. "I haven't been dismissed, and I may not leave this circle. He comes to me." He leaned his horned head on Edward's shoulder.

It became obvious why Edward had brought us here, to me at least. Face to face with the incubus, as one must be to dismiss it, he couldn't bear the thought of parting, but once he was away from it, he knew it must be done.
"What the deuce are we going to do, Xan? It looks like they're going to... right in front of us!" Henry whispered urgently in my ear.
"I don't think they will," I said doubtfully. I walked around the scribed circle, paying attention to the glyphs and their order. "But what we're going to do is dismiss him."
"How? We didn't summon it! We weren't even involved."
I frowned and pointed at one Glyph. "You weren't; but Edward seems to have copied my notes quite liberally. That puts my signature in the works. But I don't think I can command. I shall have to persuade."
Henry thought for a moment. "Well if anyone could do it, it is you, Xan. I swear you could charm birds from the trees if you put your mind to it."
"That's not hard." I said absently. "Birds are allied quite heavily with air spirits. It is getting them to do anything afterwards that is a trick."
Henry stared at me, confused, and I remembered that to him, magic was a hobby, like cards, only without the chance of loosing one's fortune.
"Henry, would you go guard the door?" I suggested. "I've no idea how long this is going to take and we'd have a hell of a time explaining it if someone interrupted."
"Ah... yes." and he left.
The incubus was watching me quite intently, though his hands were draped on Edward. I turned away from the door, and studied him with the same scrutiny.
