Name: Ganyma Callow Ganyma: From “Ganymede”, one of the closest orbiting moons of Jupiter; the moon itself is named after the hero Ganymede in Greek Myth, a young man who is abducted by Zeus and serves as a cup-bearer for the Gods.
Callow: Meaning immature or naïve. Blood colour: #009985 - Teal; barely a tad higher than Terezi's color.
Gender: Male
Symbol:
The astronomical and astrological sign for Jupiter; in psychological astrology it also indicates a willingness to adapt and conform to social status.
Personality: Being a tealblood is, to many of Ganyma’s peers, an excellent way to allow for a smooth and unassuming life. However, living under the radar is the last thing that Ganyma wants to do. Having lived all of his young life in the middle has made the troll restless to the point where he will do anything to escape the mediocrity of the middle-class. He wants to be independent – his own troll. He wants prestige, respect, and the ability to achieve his own goals instead of carrying out his superior’s.
With his goals of becoming self-reliant in mind, Ganyma is jealous of the very high-class, as well as the very low-class. He sees highbloods that have great power and fulfill their ambitions with great admiration, and envies them for their fortunate blood typing that makes it easy for them to achieve greatness. On the other hand, he almost has a higher respect for exceptional lowbloods; great leaders, even leaders of the rebellion, are fascinating to Ganyma. Surpassing the constraints of the hemospectrum is a key point to how he views trolls of any blood color: those who act to their full capacity are objects of revelry for the troll, while trolls who conform to be lowblooded drudges or take their highblooded positions of power for granted earn his disdain.
Intense affixation on independence aside, Ganyma is typically a friendly and good-natured troll. Many character flaws tend to go over his head, as he is not very bright, and when faced with perplexing situations he always finds the most straight-forward (but not necessarily the least destructive) answer. It is very difficult for Ganyma to be set-off, as he manages to distract himself (both intentionally and unintentionally) from negative emotions. Getting along with people is something that Ganyma is good at, though he is extremely transparent when it comes to whom he looks up to and who he does not. He tends to agree with those around him and conform to the atmosphere of the room given his willingness to fit in to get ahead, as he has a hard time standing up for himself and getting ahead in the presence of more intelligent trolls.
However, he loves trying to climb the social ladder, whether it be seeking opportunities to lead others or listening in at parties. Paired with this, his knowledge of New Hemisect City and ease of travelling there has lead Ganyma to be a major collaborator, spreader and recipient of the juiciest town gossip. Often, Ganyma’s gullibility gets in the way of him being able to stop out of control gossip (as he tends to believe a large portion of it), and when faced with accusations or contradictions he will fold or change sides to the majority’s ruling or feign ignorance. Regardless, he is a surefire way to plant a seed of misinformation in New Hemisect City.
When Ganyma is on his own (he tends to prefer being away from his lusus and hive) he enjoys training at the local junkyard, but typically seeks out others when he is not occupied with training or a task.
Ganyma’s other major hobby consists of his fascination and love of masked troll wrestling. Being a fit troll with a passion for following celebrities, he fits right in watching his heroes slam each other into stupors on the mat. Masked troll wrestling is a dramatic pastime; there is a strict code of honor and high sense of duty for the wrestlers, that Ganyma can’t help but be a great big fanboy over. The best part is the largely anonymous cast of wrestling heroes on the mat: it is quite typical for these trolls to hide their blood color under masks with tinted lenses, leaving the battlefield open for any troll with spine enough to risk his livelihood and sacred standing in a high-stakes match! Ganyma is very taken in with the theatrics of the sport, and while some of it may seem forced to outsiders, Ganyma takes all if it in with earth-shattering seriousness.
He may put on a façade of disinterest towards romance and quadrants, but is enamored with the drama of oscillating quadrants, upsets and unmaskings of wrestling. Occasionally, he lets himself fantasize about forming an pale sporting relationship in the arena.
Strengths: Ambitious: Ganyma has an extremely strong desire to succeed, and his goals to escape mediocrity fuel this. Once he sets his eyes on a target, he charges towards it with vigor, setting it as a prominent fixture in his daily routine. Ganyma will go to great lengths to take on these goals, even if he does not have the best judgement in his attack plan. He is willing to take on the most harrowing tasks, as well, as long as he firmly believes in the cause. His ambition and drive can become extremely formidable if his entire heart is into it.
Sociable: His comfort in New Hemisect has fostered his familiarity with its denizens, and he is well versed in social situations. Ganyma knows by intuition how to please, and naturally fits into any crowd. Ganyma will socialize with any troll, regardless of status, and is hard-pressed to hold long-lasting grudges. Notably, Ganyma’s tendency to look over personality flaws and ill-meaning social cues makes him a valuable friend and ally to have. He is easy to get along with, and because of his socializing Ganyma is often active in the institutions and groups that he is a part of, always trying to get ahead.
Strong: Ganyma is certainly a fighting spirit, and focuses his technique on defense and holding his foes at bay. He is physically toned, and boasts extremely impressive upper-body strength. Ganyma is particularly good at grappling, which gives him a hand-to-hand advantage. He has a fair bit of speed, but prefers to use his less formidable leg strength for high flying moves that he picked up from his idols in the wrestling ring. He takes great pride in his physical strength, and enjoys a good bout. Typically, Ganyma does not search out a reason to fight, but will step up if challenged or if his occupation requires it.
Unflappable: Whether it be through physical or emotional prodding, the troll has learned (through the constant literal jabbing of his lusus) to push negative emotions to the back of his mind. He is very skilled at keeping his cool and avoiding this kind of stress, instead finding the bright side of any situation. Ganyma is always looking for an edge in his path to succeed, and often doesn’t even slow down enough to think of the many pitfalls that he has fallen into (though it certainly helps that, on occasion, Ganyma doesn’t process or realize that these pitfalls occur). Because of all of these factors, it takes a great deal to upset Ganyma, who usually maintains a mostly-sunny personality.
Flaws: Simple: Ganyma is, admittedly, not very bright. While the troll enjoys being in the background of intellectual conversations of his superiors, he has a hard time understanding complex ideas. He has self-awareness of his problem, but blames it on poor memory due to wounds inflicted by his lusus (which may not be too far off). This leads to Ganyma repeating information to himself constantly – he knows many directions by heart, and many obvious facts to him are self-evident (who reigns over Alternia, the classes of the hemospectrum, et cetera). However, his gullibility allows for even the simplest of facts to be skewed by a clever foe. If convinced eloquently enough, Ganyma will accept falsehoods as truths because he doesn’t know any better, and often wants to maintain a knowledgeable façade. This tends to stunt his social climbing, but ironically helps those who manipulate his intellect succeed.
Shortsighted: While his ambition is great, Ganyma gets tunnel vision in each particular task that he takes, and he endlessly misses the bigger picture. Because of this, Ganyma’s daily life tends to lead him up a staircase of ambition and back down again: he tackles ideas of grandeur with full intensity only to reach the end of the climb with no bright ideas nor a clue of how to proceed, leaving his poorly formed plans to crumble. The troll’s shortsightedness also makes him careless in his actions, as he doesn’t have the foresight to see his plans through fully. His head-first methods of completing objectives are either overly simplistic or overly complex, with gaping holes in both techniques, and sometimes after a particularly complicated plan he will unknowingly end up with a different goal than he started with.
Dependent: Ganyma’s inability to work on his own without his plans crashing to the ground has caused him, quite tragically, to be dependent on more aggressive and crafty trolls. He is a constant bag of contradictions, craving self-reliance while constantly toadying up to those above him. He tries to learn their tricks, and how those in charge are able to maintain a social grasp upon their followers, but is never charismatic or brilliant enough to manage a long-term organization of any significance. Ganyma’s cycle of dependence comes and goes. When he is up and inspired by his ambitious training towards independence, Ganyma gains an inflated self-importance. Inevitably, when he hits a deadly snag, Ganyma will retreat into self-blame, falling under the wing of whomever will take him in and foster his ego and feed his misconceptions about independence.
Fickle: Whoever has Ganyma’s trust and respect has his muscle and full attention – regardless of the shape of their plans. Ganyma is so interested in becoming a leader among trolls that he will settle for exalted or infamous, and is willing to shift his allegiance to whoever’s side he finds is the best opportunity to do so. While he often consciously makes these decisions, part of Ganyma’s capriciousness stems from his gullibility. His stance on a particular subject might change due to peer pressure, misunderstanding or otherwise, and he can be a bit of a wild card depending on the controversy and amount of players surrounding any current event.
Weapon: Ganyma’s weapons of choice are his fingerless grappling gloves, outfitted with push daggers just above his knuckles. He can eject the blades from his gloves by putting pressure on the back of his hand, and can return them manually. Ganyma often reminds himself that hulking, ornate weapons tend to be overcompensation for a weak troll. He prefers to incapacitate and take down an enemy with his own bare hands, rather than using his concealed weapons. He rather enjoys attention that he receives for wrestling trolls into submission! Though, with the amount of violence constantly surrounding the trollish society, Ganyma submits to keeping his blades sharp for special occasions that need a certain “push”.
Appearance: Ganyma is quite a heavyweight, boasting thick arms and a wide-set torso. Despite his solid, rectangular upper-body, Ganyma has short legs that pale in comparison to his girth. He stands at a squat 5’6”, and when he isn’t puffing out his barrel-chest to impress others, his poor posture tends to make him look even shorter. He dresses in a simple, fitted black t-shirt and cuffed grey jeans. He often wears reddish-colored sneakers, but wears black cowboy boots when he is feeling particularly jaunty.
The young troll’s face has seen a slew of beatings, and boasts a crooked broken nose to show for them. While his nose hinders his speech and gives him a rather stuffed manner of speaking, his tone is bellowing and carries quite far. His face is broad and heart-shaped, with deep set, tilted eyes that give him a sympathetic, drooping look.
Ganyma’s horns are reminiscent of his symbol. His horns emerge near his temples, with the horn on his left side of his head being a short nubby spike. The other shoots out horizontally, turns suddenly at about a 100-degree angle, and then twisting the opposite direction to create sort of a hook shape. His more underwhelming horn is exposed by a half-shaved head, while the right side of his head boasts a rather untamed shoulder-length style. Ganyma would prefer to have both sides of his head shaved, but due to scars on his scalp inflicted by his lusus, maintains his remaining hair at its tangled and bushy length.
Home: Ganyma’s hive lies on the cusp of the social divide of New Hemisect City. It’s a basic, blocky hive that resembles a poorly made layer-cake. Originally, the carpenter drones built the home partially underground, but due to constant damage due to Ganyma’s lusus forcing his head through the floors, Ganyma decided to build upwards to give himself some space.
Overall, the building is an eyesore. Notably, there are broken ladders and notches carved into the spongy walls. The windows and doors are mostly holes in the building, and in bad weather are covered with thick metal sheets. It’s clear that Ganyma is not a craftsman of any sort; in fact, the hive’s extra layers and external ladders were afterthoughts, when he realized that stairs had been forgotten in the original build.
The hives around Ganyma's home were built some time after (and much to his lusus’ chagrin), and are mostly homes to low-blooded trolls, being thickly populated stems.
Ganyma doesn’t spend much time in his room and mostly uses it for storage of his plans and scrawlings. His notes to himself include plans of varying levels of grandeur, self-righteous musings, snippets of gossip and reminders. It’s sparsely furnished otherwise, with a squashed-looking recuperacoon and some heavy objects for working out during sleepless days.
Lusus: Strochio is a monstrous ostrich lusus (respectfully referred to as Ostrichfather on occasion by Ganyma), whose foul attitude and sharp gaze consistently catches young trolls off guard. He is a great, bulky bird, standing at 10 feet tall. Strochio boasts huge saurian legs, and similarly reptilian arms instead of wings. He uses his bulky limbs to push others "the hell out the way" in the city, but finds being in confined spaces upsetting. Strochio prefers to wander in open areas, and enjoys self-reliant and dangerous behavior, which is largely why Ganyma is a huge disappointment. In Ganyma’s wiggler days, the troll appeared to be strong and forceful, having no problems pushing and shoving his way to the top. However, in taking him as his ward, he found that his dependence on others’ leadership and lack of wit caused most of his attempts to push him out of the nest (occasionally literally) to be rather dangerous for the troll.
Therefore, when was still young, Ganyma’s lusus employed a strict regimen of "training". He would, for instance, be picked up (often by the hair, kicking and screaming) and dragged into the city, away from the comfort of his hive. While Ganyma now has a familiarity with the city, he still doesn’t understand what his lusus was trying to get at, much to Strochio’s irritation. His lusus still hasn’t given up on the troll in an odd, vindictive way, and often sets primitive traps for him around the hive, as well as ambushing him on occasion.
Power: None.
