The first Digimon game was pretty good, then the series kind of got progressively worse. Admittedly I've never played Digimon World 2, but I have played 3 and it felt like it was trying to mimic Pokemon.
In Digimon World you got one partner which you had to take care of in specific ways to get different digivolutions. Taking care of your digimon involved keeping food on hand in case it got hungry, taking it to a toilet if it had to go to the bathroom, letting it rest if its' tiredness level got too high, helping it get to sleep, and training its' stats so it could battle stronger digimon. Several things influenced what your digimon would digivolve into, including happiness, discipline, weight, stats, and how many battles you've won. The goal of the game is to bring back digimon to the abandoned File City who left after a mysterious incident occurred causing the digimon that lived in the city to go wild and move out.
To me, this is the only game in the series that I felt like they actually tried to make good, and not just a rip-off of Pokemon. The digimon series was really good too, season 3 being my favorite. Tamers had a good story, with each character actually having a pretty well developed story. Of these stories my favorite was Impmon, a weak, rookie level digimon who claimed to hate humans and was only concerned with getting stronger. Later, Impmon is nearly beaten to death, and retreats. Hitting rock bottom, Impmon is ready to just give up, and go back to the digital world when the Devas, a group of 12 strong digimon, offers him power in exchange for his services. Agreeing to this, Impmon is cast into a lake of magma and emerges as Beelzemon, a mega level devil digimon.
Beelzemon hunts down the tamers and attacks them, but Leomon attempts to protect them and dies at the hands of Beelzemon. Jeri, Leomon's partner, is left heartbroken and in a state of total shock while Takato, partner to Guilmon, uses his rage and hatred of Beelzemon to digivolve Guilmon into Megidramon, a terrible and powerful digimon whose very existence started destroying the digital world. Beelzemon defeats Megidramon however, and is about to finish him and Takato off when Takato realizes the horrible thing he had done to his partner, and reaches into Guilmon's subconscious to bring him back to his original form. Takato then biomerges with Guilmon to form Galiantmon, Guilmon's true mega form. Galiantmon defeats Beelzemon and is about to strike the final blow when Jeri begs them to spare Beelzemon's life. Shocked, Beelzemon retreats from the battlefield and wanders the digital wasteland with Jeri's heartbroken look haunting him. Beelzemon is drained of energy and reverts to Impmon, who is retrieved by Rika and Renamon before returning to the human world.
Upon returning to the human world, Impmon has gone through a change, he no longer craves power, or causes trouble to the humans and even seeks out his old tamers, a couple of little kids who drove him to his previous state by fighting over him like a toy. The kids have changed for the better as well, feeling deeply sorry for how they acted. Impmon sees the other tamers fighting a new threat on television, and rushes off to fight with them, but not before probably my favorite scene happens.
Impmon is stopped by his tamers, the little girl says that they love him and the boy gives him his toy gun, telling him that he could use it to blast all the bad guys. Impmon says he loves them too before running off, knowing that in his current state he'll probably be killed. Impmon manages to digivolve into Beelzemon however, and turns the little toy gun into his powerful Corona Blaster. This new form of Beelzemon grows large, black wings and flies to the aid of the other tamers, who understandably don't trust him at first. Beelzemon helps destroy one of the D-reaper's puppets, and gains the trust of the other tamers.
Later, Beelzemon learns that Jeri is being held prisoner by the D-reaper, and immediately rushes into battle to save her. He makes it to the orb that's holding her and fights desperately to break it open, eventually using Leomon's Fist of the Beast King attack and succeeding. However, seeing her old partner's attack being used by the very one that killed him brings back painful memories and Jeri ignores Beelzemon who is desperately calling out to her to grab his hand. The orb repairs itself and Beelzemon is shot away from the D-reaper. He tries to fight his way back to attempt to help Jeri again, but is nearly killed. Beelzemon is rescued, but doesn't attempt to fight against the D-reaper any more.
In the final episode when Jeri is rescued she shows that she was worried about Impmon's safety, and even forgives him for what he had done. This little scene just gets me every time.
I haven't watched any other digimon seasons after that, although Xros Wars sounds like it might be good. I'd also really love to see a remake of Digimon World, maybe adding mega level digivolutions in as well.
