Friendship
by Derek Wamboldt on Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 11:18pm

Okay. first and foremost what got me started on this was a friend of mine when we watched The Lord of The Rings The Two Towers. I decided to re-watch them all and did so today, January 1st, 2011. (Now if you're not familiar with these films I suggest you watch them at least once to kinda get the idea of what I'm going to delve into here.) And it got me thinking about friendship, one of the greatest themes in the movies. There are many examples throughout the movies of this such as when Gimli says something about how he can believe he's about to die fighting side by side with and elf." Then Legolas says "How about fighting side by side with a friend?" to which Gimli replies "Aye. I can do that." Powerful moment of friendship. Another example is how even though Frodo takes Sam for granted and hurts him now and again Sam never gives up on him because he's his friend. Which brings me to my original point. I think the whole point of friendship has been lost in this materialistic, greed-driven world. We all think of a "friend" differently. To me a friend is someone you can almost literally do nothing with and still have a good time. A friend is someone who always has a shoulder you can cry on. A friend is someone who always is there for you. A friend is someone who walks with you to the end of the world trips you, laughs, then offers you a hand to help you up. I think the practice of true friendship has been forgotten over the years as people cared more and more about their own profit and what they can gain from life which usually consists of money and other possessions which really mean nothing in the long run. Sure it brings you happiness and joy now, but the feeling always wears off at some point. As I progress deeper into my 20th year on this planet I find myself more and more realizing the truths and meanings about life as we see it and what it truly means to be alive. It's not money, fancy cars, a big house, etc, etc,. It the relationships we make and how we treat other people throughout this life. The people we love. The people we have loved. And the people we will love yet. See, I think the whole point of living is to help anyone we can, as best as we can, when we can. We are remembered through our acts and how we impacted others during our brief visit. I also noticed that there is a lot of talk about resolutions around the water cooler, on television, at home, etc. I think we should all make it our resolution to just be better people. I think we all need to make it our resolution to help someone in need just for the sake of helping them. Not for recognition and not for profit. Just to help someone who is down on their luck and could use it. I think we should also make it our resolution to take our friends for granted less because after all isn't a true friend something worth holding on to and something worth fighting as hard as you can for?

Derek Wamboldt: Now, I tagged a lot of people. I either tagged you because a) I think or know you have demonstrated this at some point, or b) I think you need to learn it. Now if you disagree with me, fine. Please do so criticism can always be useful. If you don't like this in general please feel free to untag yourself and be done with it. Either way it is what it is.

Derek Wamboldt: Or I tagged you because I feel you have the potential to understand friendship as I see it.
