It seems like the whole "Nature vs. Nuture" debate has been doing nothing but increasing & increasing in popularity & prominence, & is without question one of the biggest debates about what makes us who we are. So why not bring it here? After all, this subforum badly needs some new topics of discussion, so I'm providing some!

For those who aren't familiar with the phrase "Nature vs. Nuture", I'll clarify: the debate of "Nature vs. Nuture" is all about what makes an individual who they are, "nature" -- which refers to genetics, & them "being a certain way because they're born that way" -- & "nuture" -- which refers to the way people are raised, & their culture & morals they learn as a child & such making them the way they are.

How big of a role do you think Nature plays in making a person who they are? How big of a role do you think Nuture plays? &, most importantly, why?

hmmm... this has been quite the difficult topic formed, as i am still not quite settled on what i think yet... i've gotten so deeply involved in philosophizing it that i've incorporated ideas from all kinds of sources, including the animes Ghost In The Shell, Big O, and the manga Alita: Battle Angel.

i was getting to the point of thinking that maybe, just maybe, who we are is defined entirely be our Name and our Occupation. that our Identity is merely who we're called and what we do. it seemed a reasonable enough answer to come to. but then a new idea came crashing into me.

our environment. what determines our name, and our profession? is it realy our choice? we are usually given a name early on in life, and even if we change it we usually remember what we were called before. it effects us for the rest of our lives. also, our proffession may be a conscious choice we had, but that decision was made based on other factors, wasn't it? how do we determine just how much of our choices are realy our own?

this is of course a little strayed from the point of the discussion. but i don't quite know yet how to tackle whether it is Nurture or Nature that determines these factors about who we are. judging by the general fact that humans seem to mimic what they experience, or make decision based off of those outside stimuli, i'd probably say it's more Nurturing. but the argument comes up that the methodology of "Monkey See, Monkey Do" is an Instinctual Adaptive Quality that is hardwired into our brains. in that way i suppose it's a matter of interpretation, and the answer becomes extremely ambiguous. xp

another issue has come up as well. one that has caught up with me. that our bodies become a factor that we take into account when making our conscious and subconscious choices, including attitude. the form of our Bodies is one part Genetics and one part personal effort, and the effort is likely to be at least as much what we are taught as it is instinctual. that being said, it becomes clear that in this regard we realy do need to give credit to both in shaping who we are.

again i leave you with the simple answer that i don't quite have it all figured out yet. sorry to say. but i do hope that what i have gathered so far in attempting to understand it has proved helpfull to anyone.
