Tang:
1) Civil Service
-The civil service was a process in which individuals took imperial exams to earn a spot in government and become appointed as state bureaucrats and officials.
China:
-Because being of wealth or noble class was not a prerequisite in taking the imperial exams, more families were able to have their sons have a high ranking career which improved their state of life and allowed for great social mobility.
-The best talent was drawn into government by this efficient sorting of candidates.
-Tang government established state-run schools to promote widespread Confucian education.
-It prevented the Tang government from becoming imperially dependent on powerful aristocratic families and warlords which would have destabilizing consequences.
World:
-It greatly influenced the development of European and American systems. Now, all over the world, schooling, employment, and other kinds of education-oriented activities are based off of a form of civil service, a process which first dated back hundreds of years ago in China.
2) Woodblock Printing: It is a technique of for printing texts, images, and patterns that originated in China. It was originally used to printing patterns on clothing.
China: -Similar to movable type printing, it improved literacy and made the written word available to a larger audience.
-Allowed more people of lower class to afford cheaper ways of studying which led to more sons of the lower social class being able to take imperial exams and passing them.
-Even though movable type printing was invented later on in the 11th century, woodblock printing was the dominant printing type of China until the European printing press was invented and widely accepted in Asia.
World: -This form of printing spread throughout the world and influenced many different cultures and civilizations. It was used in Egypt, Japan, Europe, and France. The old but significant idea was improved upon many times as movable type and metal type was invented. It led to the invention of the printing press, which we still use today.
