Enter: Maria and Jake
Enter: Maria and Jake
Silence choked the air. Eyes flutter open and emerald eyes greeted by the morning sunlight. A female figure sat up from what seemed to be a bed made from silk pillows. Glistening brown hair floated around the girl's pale face and body. Pink lips began to form the shapes of words, but no sound was audible. What was she trying to say? Why can't she be heard?
"...Maria."
Beep Beep Beep.
"No, five more minutes" a female voice groaned, as she turned onto her stomach and stuffed her head under her fuzzy, purple pillow. A few minutes later, she took her head out from under the pillow and gazed at the alarm clock with a half opened eye. The clock read 7:04. The girl stared blankly at the clock, then her eyes widened as she jumped up and out of her bed.
"I need to get ready!" she cried, rushing towards her bathroom door but slipped and fell on her white, shag carpet. Her eye twitched in pain as she rolled over onto her back.
"Why don't I just get rid of this thing already?" she questioned, getting up and rubbing her chest through her tank top. As she slumped into the bathroom, her gaze met that of her reflection's. Her pixie cut, blonde hair was fluffy and very messy looking. Looks good, she thought with a smile as she grabbed her toothbrush and toothpaste off of the counter. While she was brushing her teeth, her mom called to her from downstairs,
"Maria! Are you awake yet?"
"Yes! I am m-mom" she choked out her last word because she swallowed a bit of the toothpaste in her mouth and began to cough.
"Hurry or you'll be late!" her mom's voice faded, like she had walked away from the stairs. Maria spit out the foamy toothpaste and quickly rinsed off her toothbrush, placing it back to it's original spot on the counter. She cupped her hand under the water, drank some and then spit it out. Wiping her mouth, she head out of the bathroom and over to her dresser. Glancing over her shoulder, she stared at the clock. It now read 7:08. I don't have much time to really get ready... she thought as she slipped into a pair of black jeans, which had white stitching going down the sides of the legs. Rummaging through her drawers, she couldn't seem to find any clean shirts. Shrugging, she kept her pajama top on: A white tank top with black trimming along the bottom. She finished off her look with a light grey sweater and faded black sneakers. Maria jogged out of her room and downstairs. Walking into the kitchen, she saw that her mom was taking a sip of her coffee and was reading the morning paper. Maria grabbed her i-pod off the kitchen table and grabbed her bag that was on the chair.
"See ya later mom" she said, leaning across the table and gave her mom a kiss on the cheek. Her mom smiled and nodded her head before she returned to the paper. Leaving the kitchen, Maria was about to leave her house when her phone made a chiming noise. Pulling out her cell phone, she noticed she had gotten a text message from her friend, Jake. Looking at the message, it read:
From: Jake
Subject: Hey
Message: I'm waiting outside your house. I missed the bus today so I get to walk with you to school after all =]
Aw, how sweet of him, she thought while opening the door. Sure enough, Jake was standing on the sidewalk in front of her house. Jake's messy, black and blonde hair shifted around in the wind as he turned around to look at Maria. His yellow eyes met her gold-speckled blue ones and he smiled sweetly at her.
"Hey" he said, reaching over and putting his arm around her as she walked towards him.
"Hi" she said in return, hugging him with both arms.
"Ready to go?"
"Yeah" she replied with a smile and began to walk. Jake's arm had gently slipped off her shoulder and back to his side. When that happened, his yellow eyes seemed to darken and sadden a bit. He followed after her, only quickening his pace a bit to catch up.
"I had a weird dream" she said, not even looking at him and only focusing on the road in front of her.
"What was it?"
"I saw this girl..." Maria began and Jake raised an eyebrow at her. She scoffed and continued "It's hard to explain. She looked like she was underwater. She had brown hair and green eyes and she tried to talk to me at first but I couldn't hear her, I only heard my name and that's when I woke up" she took a deep breath, not realizing she didn't breathe during her rambling. Jake's expression remained the same but his eyes revealed that he was surprised at hearing this.
"I had the same dream..." he said, shoving his hands into the pockets of his over sized, black sweater.
"Really? That's so weird"
Before their conversation could go any further, they reached the high school.
