Briar was such a simple heart, bundled and hidden in such a complex, yet small package of an 11 year old boy. Often even he missed notice of his own heart. And yet, looking at the boy in a brief glimpse of joy, one could see.... he shined like a light.... he was so innocent, so simple.... quiet and reserved, but at other times irrational, rowdy, a hardened shell. Years and years had built layers upon him. Some have said he was by now so hidden from himself that that which lie in the depths of his heart and soul was to stay there, trapped, forever. He had long ago given up on trust, or so he claimed. Yet... do we ever fully give up on trust? if we did, how would everyday life even be possible? He had given up on hope, he claimed. But again, when there is no hope left in one's heart, there is no will to live... and Briar very much had that will.... So it would come to seem that even Briar himself did not know where he stood anymore..... For all this, briar could be reserved, quiet, and wise as a man whom has come close to the edge of life and has seen all there is for him to see. Briar HAD seen much in his life. But he was still a child and often had no more sense and wisdom than did any other boy his age. So what CAN we say, then, about Briar? Yes, he is a walking contradiction...But also... he is a simple heart.
