Fun with Explosives
9 o’clock at O’Hare
A ticking noise in my ear
It wasn’t ticking before
I’ve been wrong before though
Dear Lord, let it be a watch
9:15 in a cab
It should have gone off by now
It must be a watch, the thing that ticks
Maybe it is mine.
Seconds slide across the slippery streets
9:45 in my apartment
Thoughts racing, my palms perspire
Here it goes
The zipper tugs at the metal teeth
Breath goes stale in my lungs
All is red
10 o’ clock in the ER
Gauze across the charred flesh
Machines, metallic and threatening, beep rapidly
That’s probably all they do
Doctors scream, and I can barley hear it
10:02 in Heaven
It could be Hell.
I don’t care right now
Freed and peaceful, the pain is gone
