What really annoys me is when you ask "can I..." and then someone says "I don't Know, can you?" in an attempt to get you to say may instead of can. The thing is, there's really no difference! We all know you're perfectly cabable of doing something, but you need to ask for permission before doing it. Now if they reply "you can, but I'm not going to let you," then that obviosly negates that you can part, because you obviously can't if they're not going to let you. So "can I?" is just the same as "May I?" I just wanted to make that clear. stressed
