Defending Territory
“Dad, do you think we’ll get him?” This is the sound that I awoke to. I am, as these imbecilic creatures would call me, a rat. Also, I have just made residence in a nice, quaint home. Apparently, the welcoming crew was arriving a little early; I have not finished my nap. “Now we sit and wait, you hold the rifle, Laurence.” This was the voice of an older creature, the rat peered out to see what he was about to face. There was an article of furniture barricading him from running too far. Suddenly, an obviously younger creature gasped and lifted his head from a long shiny pipe, which had a handle at the end. I quickly dove my eyes back into my home, and the creature started whispering feverishly, “Dad, dad! I saw him! But he went back in!” the older creature dismissed it and told him to keep his voice down. I had to get a better look; my curiosity had reached a level that not even I could contain. Slowly and without noise, I trailed down my many halls and to my second door. At this hole, they have not barricaded me in, so I got a fairly good look at them. The elderly creature was resting in a lazy sprawl. What nasty posture, I thought to myself. His long eyes were shut and dug into his haggard face. He looked as though he did not have enough strength to stand on his own two feet. The youthful creature held his post with false confidence. He looked more like a thing that had no idea what he was supposed to be doing. His black hair shivered with anticipation, as did his

whole body. By then, I had a good enough idea of what I shall do to eliminate these pesky invaders. I scampered joyfully back to the guarded door.
My plan was set; all that was needed was for it to be enforced. I chuckled at my own superior ability, for I to surpass the dominating creature, is one great achievement. I took one last look in the mirror and scampered towards the door. I made one small twitch near the door and as expected the young creature enforced the pipe to be steadier. Again, I laughed at my own achievements. After I had calmed down, I took one deep breath and dashed out the door as if I had rabies. The young creature alerted the elder and they took one look at me. The boy, oh I laugh at the memory of his face, he stood and ran, fearing a miniscule thing like me! However the elder stood standing in astonishment, with me still dashing towards them. He let out a wild screech and followed the other creature to their exit. I fall to the floor in laughter; their faces were filled of utmost terror! It took me quite a few hours to slow my merriment. To this very day, they have not been able to pry me from my home.
