Around the World in 102 Days
Chapter One
The Decision
Alex ran out of the school building, with a group of kids, her braids brown braids swung back and forth as she made her way down the stairs and to the sidewalk. She heard the bell still ringing from inside the building. Off in the distance Alex heard a faint “Alex! Wait up!!” she immediately turned on a heal to see Sarah Middleton, her long time best friend and next door neighbor, since preschool. Sarah caught up to Alex and breathed deeply for a moment, her red head band was coming off and she was sweating from the pre-summer heat, even with that Sarah never was the best runner, unlike Alex who was on the schools track team. Finally Sarah caught her breath and stood up, “So, you decided where we’re going?” Sarah asked, and began walking towards their houses. Alex was turning 13 the day school ended, her parents told her, last week that she could go anywhere she wanted, and Sarah could come. “No, not yet. I still don’t know if they meant another country, or something like, the worlds biggest wheel of cheese.” Sarah giggled a bit then they began talking about last night’s episode of Travelocity. They reached the front of their houses, “I have some homework to do, I’ll call you later!” Sarah said walking up her steps. Alex waved and walked into her house “Mom, I’m home!” she yelled throwing her backpack on the table and plopping on the couch. She could smell the scent of taco meat being seasoned from the kitchen. Unlike Sarah, Alex had no homework today, so she turned on the television. She watched the end of Penguin Rock, and on came Around the World in 80 Days, Alex began to think. Finally after several minutes she had made her decision, Alex ran into the kitchen, following the taco smell, and found her mother cooking, “Mom!” She yelled and her mother spun around to look at her, “Yes dear?” “Mom,” Alex started, “I know where I want to go for my birthday…around the world!!” she yelled and through her arms in the air. Alex’s mom leaned against the counter with a dazed look on her face “Oh, Alexandra, you couldn’t just go to American Girl Palace like every other girl??” Alex wasn’t going to give up that easy “Well if Jackie Chan can do it in 80 days, why can’t me and Sarah do it in 102, all summer!” she asked. All was quiet for a moment, and then Alex’s Mom said with a sigh, “Then you better go get the atlas and see what countries you want to go to.” Alex’s face lighted up even more, she gave her mom a thank you kiss and hug, then ran off to find a Map.
