American Nightmare: Prelude to Dusk II
I immediately thought, “You’ve got to be ******** kidding me.” Of course I couldn’t get stuck in here with a level headed sane person. Hell, I was more than ready to settle for someone who was just scared shitless and panicking. But no, I had to get the psycho didn’t I…. Besides the fact that it was darker than s**t in here, she forced me to roll over and hand cuffed me and walked me to the back of the store. Luckily, her barricading skills seemed top notch and we had several other obstacles between us and the zombies. She shoved me through a door into a small office that was, no surprise here, also pitch black. It wasn’t until she’d closed the door behind us, locked it, and secured it with a filing cabinet that she’d even turned on the light. The light stung my eyes after being in the dark so long, and of course, I didn’t have a free hand to shield my vision so all I could do was face away and keep my eyes closed. Before I could let my eyes adjust she shoved me yet again down into a chair behind me. Great, she was crazy and violent, not my day. When I could finally see again, yet another shock, I was staring into the face of a gorgeous woman. Long dark hair that shined like it was just washed, and smooth white skin without a single blemish. She looked like she’d just gotten a full makeover. I guess they come in all types though, still I’d prefer her a little more rugged since I’d no doubt have to take her down when the opportunity arose. Having to hurt a pretty girl would be a little harder on the conscience….

“Why are you here?” she demanded in a solid tone. It caught me off guard since it was the first time I’d heard anything out of her mouth that wasn’t a whisper. When I failed to answer immediately she gave me an angry scowl and demanded again, “What reason did you come to this place?” This time I wanted to laugh at her emphasizing as if I didn’t understand English at all.

“I came to find people who need help.” I said completely lying through my teeth. It was a useful skill to have being able to lie so well. I wasn’t about to tell her I was running around looking for just another place to hold out. Like anyone would take kindly to someone else scouting out their camp to use.

“Well, thanks for all the help! I was having trouble attracting all the undead to my ******** hiding spot!” she yelled as she began disarming me and throwing my gear on a nearby table. I had no response here. She was right, I’d probably just ******** her day up something fierce.

“Well it looks like we’re in the same boat now, so how about you cut me loose and we work together eh?” I spoke as politely and convincingly as possible in hopes of getting the .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pointed somewhere (anywhere) other than at me. I looked her in the eyes and attempted the best endearing “I’m sorry” look possible.

She lowered the gun slightly and looked towards the door that muffled the hungry cries of the unloving bodies. “I suppose I don’t have much choice in the matter anymore….” She softly bit her lower lip as she spoke to me. “I can tell at the least that you’re not a threat to me, and I’d feel bad if you died on my watch.” She held her arms and looked back at me appearing much more human now. I smiled softly and cocked my head slightly, relaxing my body to allow her to notice me dropping my guard.

“I think together we can accomplish a lot here.” I finished off as she moved next to me and began to undue the handcuffs. “Nothing wrong with making new friends you know.” I tried to be cheery, but it seemed I had pushed my faking to its limits finally and she’d caught on. Or so I thought. She quickly punched me straight in the gut hard, and stood back up straight with the cuffs in hand.

“You’re no friend, let’s get this straight. I can see right through you guy. Trying to act all coy and get on my good side. I can smell it on you. You’re rotten to the core. Keep your god damned distance.” She spat in a menacing tone.

“Gee, that’s funny, I only smell disintegrating flesh. What do you bathe in that s**t? When was the last time you got out of here b***h? At least I’m keeping clean. And you don’t know s**t about me, so don’t act like you’re Mother ******** Teresa yourself.” I shouted back. I knew immediately it was a low blow. I could question her personality all day, but it was unfair to take a cheap shot knowing there was no way she could have access to a shower. She was lucky this store she was holed up in had a bathroom at all. Regardless, I got what was coming for it. She immediately smacked me right across the face and yelled profanities at me.

“******** you, you piece of s**t! It only took you a few ******** seconds to prove me right! You’re scum!” She stormed into the bathroom at the end of the office and slammed the door. I heard the water running and I could tell she was trying to clean up. I felt bad. Truth was her hygiene was fine, even if she was stuck here for days. I really did feel like an a*****e, but at the same time I couldn’t help it since she was also a b***h. Really, a mixed emotion, to hate yourself for being a d**k while at the very same time being driven to be more of one. Regardless, she deserved it, and she’ll probably get more of it at this rate. The water stopped running at about the same time I had re-equipped most of my gear. I re-holstered my pistol when she opened the door and gave me the most evil gaze I’d ever seen. Honestly, she might as well have just told me to go die in a fire. I should have let it go, but I couldn’t

“Much better, now it smells like you only took a quick shower in rotten corpse instead of soaked in it.” I muttered in a pissed off manner. As she walked past me I put up a big grin, obviously faking my enthusiasm. That lasted a whopping two seconds until she elbowed me in the kidney making me double over and wince. “Ugh…. Good to know I’ll be bunking up with only a mild b***h….”

“Bunking my a**…. You’d be sleeping with the zombies if I had it my way a*****e….” She spat as she threw a pillow at my face. “You’re lucky I even let you use my spare supplies here.” She unrolled a sleeping bag on the ground next to the cabinet blocking the door and began to form her bedding. I followed suite a few feet away near the desk. I glanced at the blue LED clock that sat among the scattered items on the table top and noticed that it was nearly 4:00 A.M. already. I was pretty tired, and I wasn’t making it home anytime soon now. So I took off all my gear and lay down as she turned off the light. In the dark I sat pondering how I got into this predicament. It was definitely a pretty s**t day, and in the morning I’d get to wake up to the shining face of someone I could barely stand.

“I forgot to mention…. My name is David….” I spoke quietly and tried my hardest not to sound insincere again. “I figure I should call you something other than whore every once in a while….” I didn’t have to hide any malice in my words now. I would be stuck with this girl for a while, so I’d like to not have to be at her throat every other sentence.

“Amanda….” She stated quietly, like the way she’d spoken before I’d gotten inside. It was a relief actually. It seems I won’t have to worry about her holding things against me for long. Still she didn’t say anything after that.

“I’m sorry…. I didn’t mean for it to end up like this….” Again, my intentions were true. At this point, I’ll try to avoid deceiving her since it obviously doesn’t work. “Will the barricades hold?” I asked.

“Yes…. We’ll be fine…. And…. Thank you….” She spoke in the same low tone. This time she rolled over after her statement facing the wall. It seemed awfully obvious she wanted the conversation to end, so I let it die. Still, I wanted to know what she was thanking me for. It would have to wait. I close my eyes and think about tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a busy day yet again. Either way, I would be ready for it, because tonight would be the best sleep I’d had in weeks.
