In China, the dragon has a place of of honor in the culture. the number of claws on each foot of the dragon shows a persons rank. Five clawed dragons on clothing could only be worn by the emperor. Japan also has reverence for the dragon. One dragon, named Yasha, is one of the demon-gods that protect Buddhism.
The Christian idea of the dragon is not as cheery as the Chinese or Japanese. The dragon represented evil. Whether it be the devil or pagans, the dragon became the personification of that.
