Chapter 3 – Yoanna

We were on our way to school, riding the boat. Vicky and Yoanna’s always been teasing me and asking me questions about my past ever since the day they asked two weeks ago. It really got on my nerves. Sometimes I’d go stand up for myself, but I couldn’t help it either. Once it’s in my head, it’s hard to get it out.
We started to walk now. All the way to school, well it wasn’t that far away. It only took a few minutes to get there. This was good, because we know we won’t be late and it isn’t that tiring.
We parted from Wakka and Tidus once we reached our classroom. I walked in and unpacked my stuff, then I placed my bag in the shelf and walked back to my seat. I sat down. Why was I safe? Vicky and Yoanna usually go after me once I enter the classroom. I looked around, I saw Yoanna walking back to her seat after she placed her bag there. I gripped my crystal necklace, scared. In my surprise she ignored me and didn’t even bother to talk to me.
Selphie and I looked at each other, then at Yoanna. What the hell’s going on??? It’s not that I wasn’t happy that she didn’t bully me or anything, I was just shocked. I bet Selphie was too. I think everyone was. It was very unusual.
The minutes passed as we all waited for Teacher Maebelle. Vicky hasn’t arrived yet, I started to think she was absent.
Teacher Maebelle walked in and greeted us. “Good morning class!” she said smiling.
We stood up bowing. “Good morning Teacher Maebelle!” we said in unison and sat down.
She looked around. “Oh, looks like we’ve got an absent classmate today. Vicky’s absent… Yoanna do you know anything about this? I always see you with her.” Teacher Maebelle said.
Yoanna shook her head, “no ma’am.” She said.
“Alright then.” She said then started the class. I would say this was your everyday school day, except for once I wasn’t ever called the Demon kid. I found it kind of weird. Looks like I got used to being treated badly. Weird huh?

When recess came, I saw Yoanna sitting alone. I felt bad for her, yet I also wondered why she wasn’t teasing anyone. Was it because Vicky was absent? It didn’t look like it, because Vicky was absent before and I was still teased…

“Vicky’s absent, but that means nothing at all. Demon kid, don’t try running away now.” Yoanna said.
“I’m not running away, just backing up.” I said.
“Nice excuse, demon.” She said.
Selphie had tried and help me that time.
“Do you want me to break it again?” Yoanna said pointing at Selphie’s skipping rope.
Selphie frowned a bit and tucked it inside her bag, backing up to.
“Babies.” Yoanna said.
“We are not!” I said.
“Whatever, Vicky’s not here so I won’t do much to you.” Yoanna said and walked away.
I just stared at her, when she turned around (she did it slowly) she didn’t look happy. That time I didn’t mind her…

…But now. Now, it’s bothering me. She looked extra depressed now. Did Vicky die? I wouldn’t think so, if she did Teacher Maebelle would have told us. What’s happening now? I’m totally confused.
“What do you thinks going on with Yoanna?” Selphie asked, playing with her skipping rope.
“Don’t know…” Sora said as he slid down.
“It’s really weird…” Kairi added, as she went from bar to bar in the monkey bars.
“You can say that again.” Riku said, doing some pull ups on the monkey bars.
“I’m actually kind of worried…” I said swinging on the swings. I was really high now, I’d be the highest swinger you’d ever see. I loved swinging.
“You’re worried…?” repeats Tidus.
“Uh….yeah.” I said. “Didn’t ya just hear me?”
“After what they’ve done and said to you, you’re worried?!” Selphie exclaims.
“Weird, right? Though, yes I am.” I said.
“I’ll never get what’s in that head of yours…” Kairi said laughing a bit.
I just smiled, I slowed down my swinging and stopped I got up and walked over to the others.
“Are you going to do anything about it?” Riku asks me.
I shook my head. “Nope.” I said.
The bell rang again; we headed back towards the classroom.
We hurried to our seats, the bell’s ringing almost over. Yoanna walked in just a second before she would be called late. She sat down on her seat. I watched her, she really looked depressed. I then thought about all the times she’s teased me, bullied me, and all that. It got me thinking so hard about it.
“Sharix…! Sharix…!” Selphie whispered.
“Um…yes..?’ I whisper back.
“Teacher Maebelle’s been calling ya…” she whispered.
I shot straight up, turning a little red. The whole classed look at me. Some of them were laughing, some had a facial expression of someone telling me ‘where you in another world or something?’ The only one who didn’t turn to me was Yoanna.
“Sharix dear, is everything alright?” Teacher Maebelle asked, seeing that I spaced out a while ago.
I nodded. “Yes ma’am.” I said with an embarrassed tone.
“Alright then, please solve this problem on the board.” She told me and I walked towards the front of the classroom and answered it. I went back to my seat.
“Are you ok?” asks Selphie.
“Yes, I’m fine, don’t worry.’” I reassure.
“Well, alright then.” She said and listened to the lesson again, I did too.

Lunch came, we all met outside.
“Are ya sure you’re alright?” Kairi asks me.
I nodded. “Yeah, I just spaced out a bit.”
“Well, yeah duh.” Sora said.
“You really do help Sora.” I said sarcastically.
“Why thank you.” He replies, also having sarcasm in his tone.
I rolled my eyes, but laughed a bit. We all headed towards the canteen; once we arrived we started eating. I had steak for lunch. I didn’t like steak… I looked at it as if it were something totally disgusting.
Riku saw my expression, he sat right across me. “Here, let’s exchange.” He offers.
I looked up at him, then his food. He had an all veggie meal! I just love vegetables, well I’m not vegetarian or anything if that’s what you think. I just like eating vegetables more than meat. I still eat some meat, but not that much: like steak, can’t stand it. I nodded. “Thanks, Riku. You’re a life saver.” I said exaggerating.
He laughed a bit. “No problem.” He said and then we exchanged our food. I munched on the veggie meal Riku’s father packed for him. It was delicious.
Riku looked like he was enjoying the steak that I gave. Sora was already done just about five minutes after I started. Kairi finished too, after Sora. Then I followed, then Riku, and then Tidus and Wakka, finally Selphie finished. We all packed up our lunches, Riku and I exchanging back. We headed for the play ground again, placing our lunch boxes on the shelf. We raced to the play ground. I caught up to Riku, finally, and we entered the play ground the exact same time. Sora followed then Wakka, and then Tidus, then Kairi and Selphie.
“Wow, that’s the first time someone’s actually caught up to Riku…” Selphie said.
I grinned.
“Y-you got here before me… how’s that possible..?!” Tidus said, looking at Wakka.
Wakka shrugged. “Dunno, been practicing. Have ya?” he asked him.
“N-never mind.” Tidus said and climbed up the monkey bars.
Wakka stood by the monkey bars just examining his mini blitzball key chain.
Selphie was playing with her skipping rope again.
Kairi was playing in the slide.
I stayed in the other monkey bar that was opposite to the one Tidus used, it was kind of taller.
Riku waited in line, after me for using the monkey bars.
Sora did too, waiting for Tidus.
I started swinging myself, back and forth, back and forth, doing it like a gymnast again. I had fun doing that, then I noticed only then that Riku was waiting. I stopped swinging then crossed the monkey bars to the other side and jumped down.
Riku had his go on the monkey bars, he was pretty quick. He went across in less than twenty seconds. The gaps in the monkey bars are pretty far, I’m surprised I even made it through.
We continued to play, and soon enough the bell rang. We stopped immediately; I jumped down from the monkey bars and ran towards the classroom.
Kairi slid down immediately and started running too.
Selphie stopped and folded her skipping rope, she ran too.
Riku just ran, he was standing there waiting for his turn.
Sora did too.
Tidus jumped down and ran.
Wakka clutched his key chain and then ran too, making sure it didn’t fall.
We all entered our classrooms, leaving Wakka and Tidus again.
Yoanna entered the classroom exactly like this morning. This time, I ignored her and paid attention in class.
Now it was just lessons, lessons, lessons, more lessons, lessons, oh game! Lessons, lessons, lessons….

A bell rang.
“Everyone! Pack your stuff and leave now please. There’s going to be an ordinary, old, boring teachers’ meeting today. It’s going to be held here, so please hurry. Oh and don’t tell the other teachers I said that.” Teacher Maebelle said, smiling at us.
We all smiled back at her, then everyone went to the back and grabbed they’re bags. We all packed up. Surprisingly the first one out was Yoanna, even though she was the latest one who came in at recess and lunch. The five of us gathered together and went to the exit door, we passed by Teacher Maebelle.
“Hope you can survive the meeting Teach!” Sora said smiling.
“Yes, good luck Maebelle!” Kairi added.
Selphie nodded.
“Just eat a chocolate or something after.” I said.
Riku nodded too.
“Don’t worry you guys. You may not know it or see it, but I’ve got a ton of potential and I will survive this. Have a great day, ya’ll.” Teacher Maebelle said winking at us.
We all waved good bye then went outside.
“Time out, I got to go to the bathroom, bad!” I said, dropping my bag and made a run for it.
I exited the cubicle I used, washing my hands. Another cubicle opened, with a girl crying as she exited. It was Yoanna.
I tried to ignore her as she ignored me. I couldn’t just stand there.
“Yoanna…?” I said.
“What is it?” she said bluntly.
“I-I was just wondering if you’re ok….” I said.
“O-of course I’m ok, d-demon kid.” She said. When she said ‘demon kid’ it sounded as if she didn’t want to say it.
“Are you sure?” I asked again.
“Yes, I’m fine.” She said.
There was a pause. “Is it because of Vicky, I’m sure you know the reason why she’s absent.”
“No it’s not her! It’s not!” she said immediately.
“Oh, yes. I’m sorry.” I said.
She bit her lip. “No… I’m sorry.” She said.
I stood there staying silent, shocked.
“Please understand demo- I mean Sharix. Please understand that I never wanted to hurt anyone.” Yoanna said.
“Th-then why are you doing this?” I asked.
“It’s Vicky, she’s absent because she has a fever right now by the way. She’s threatening me to do all of this.” Yoanna said.
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“Well, you see when we were still very young I already met Vicky. We were the best of friends and could never hurt anyone. But… But Vicky changed, she started to be mean to everyone. I stood there like a little wimp. Not doing anything, we used to be a big group like you and your friends. Vicky changed that, she changed everything.” She explains, calming down from her crying.
I just nodded, listening.
“One day I finally told her to stop, because I got annoyed by what she did. We were arguing, then it turned into a fight. Vicky got badly hurt because of me. She had a broken leg, and it was all my fault, because of our stupid fight I got Vicky injured. Ever since that day I blamed myself for that accident, even though her leg’s healed already. I swore to her that I’d do anything and everything for her. She told me to join her bully other kids and all, I didn’t want to. She told me we’d never be friends again if I don’t follow. I don’t want to loose Vicky. Vicky’s like a sister to me. I want her to stop, but I don’t know how to.” She said and started crying again.
“Oh Yoanna, I’m so sorry. Now I understand you a lot more, if you talk to a counselor about this she/he might help.” I told her.
“No! Then Vicky would find out.” She said.
“Please stop crying...” I said handing her a tissue. “I didn’t mean a counselor here from school, from another place. Maybe if someone you really trust like your mother or father. It could really help out.” I said.
She stayed silent, tears kept falling.
“Oh come on, stop crying your going to muck up that beautiful face of yours.” I said.
She tried to stop now, I smiled.
“Hey Sharix! Going to take any longer?!” Kairi calls.
“Coming!” I tell them, “Look I have to go, best of luck to you. Hope everything goes well.” I told Yoanna and began to walk out of the bathroom, as I reached the door Yoanna interrupted me.
“…thanks Sharix, your no demon at all by the way.” She told me and smiled.
I smiled back at her and then carried on. I got my bag.
“What the hell have you been doing in there?!” Sora asks.
“Sorry, I’ll tell you all about it on the way back home.” I told them, then we all started to walk.
As we walked, I told them everything: how Vicky treated Yoanna, how Yoanna felt, also my opinion of school days finally getting better. I continued to tell them everything. I finally finished my talking once we set foot on the island.
“Wow! That’s the real reason behind all of this?” Selphie said.
I nodded.
“Poor Yoanna…” Kairi said.
“At least she would be able to stop with the teasing.” Sora said.
“Yeah all we need to worry about is Vicky now.” Tidus said.
Riku and Wakka nodded.
Then we said our good byes for that day and went to our own houses. Kairi and I went up our room. We did our homework. So she helped me out in history and I helped her out in math, like anyone but us is going to find out. We were called for dinner, so we ate then went up our bed. I brushed my teeth and changed into pajamas, so did Kairi after me. Then I went up my part of the bunk bed, Kairi climbed into hers.
“Good night.” She told me turning her night light on.
“Good night.” I told her as I turned my lamp off. I smiled and thought about what happened today, kind of twisted actually. I couldn’t get the last part of what Yoanna said out of my head:” ...your no demon at all…. “ Yoanna… she’s a real nice girl if you get to know her.”
