Capital punishment effective so society should not abolish it. Capital punishment decreases crime and murders. Capital punishment also keeps prisons open, as well as decrease taxes that pay for criminal welfare. These reasons and more explain why capital punishment should not be abolished.
Capital Punishment has been around since the beginning of mans existence and is still used today. In the united states (u.s) most states still carry the death penalty. The death penalty is used when someone is tried as a adult for a murder or multiple rapes and found guilty. they are then taken to death row to await their execution date. The U.S. uses more “humane” ways of execution than other countries. The most common types of execution in the U.S. are lethal injection and the electric chair. These two types of executions are believed to be quick and painless to the convict.
There are many types of execution used around the world, some are from hundreds of years ago. Lynchings were a type of Chinese execution, they were used commonly in Japan and china. A lynching was when someone was tied to a rock post or tree and stabbed until they died. Theses were done without a trial most of the time. They usually died from loss of blood or extreme shock. Starving was common in most nations . Starving was when someone was tied down and deprived of food and water for days untill they died. This type of execution was also held without a trial very often. Another method of execution was medieval torture devices ranging from the iron maiden to the rack. These types of execution were held in medieval times and were very gruesome. This execution rarely saw a trial. A execution that is seen in some countries today is beheading. Beheading is when a convict has their head chopped off with a sword or ax. These usually had trials for them but some did not. The guillotine was a French beheading device. A large blade slid down 2 boards and sliced the convicts head off. This rarely saw a trial as well and was used often during the French revolution. One type of execution that is still often used today are hangings though not in the U.S. hangings are when a convict has a knot such as a noose or a slipknot tied around their neck and are dropped down, once dropped the knot tightens quickly around their throat snapping their neck and killing them. These almost always had trials but a few had not. Firing squads were used in wars often by the Spanish. Firing squads lined up and fired upon a man tied to a post. Gassing was when a convict was placed in an airtight room which was filled with a poisonous gas that killed the convict. More recent execution ideas such as the electric chair and lethal injection, are both used in the U.S. today. They replaced less humane executions. A lethal injection is when a convict is injected with a chemical that stops their heart and kills them. The electric chair is seen in movies quite often. A convict is strapped to a chair then has a helmet placed on his head he than has a high voltage of electricity run through his body killing him. The electric chair and lethal injection are believed to be painless.
. Capital punishment is very effective because most people fear dying. In one interview with an inmate he said “I’m not gonna act like those idiots who claim they didn’t kill nobody, because its not true. The thought of being killed scares me a little. Even now I have nightmares about the chair. Id rather have life prison then be sentenced to death”- Jeremy Clyde 1999. This shows that criminals fear the death penalty. Texas also proves this idea, in 1986 Texas abolished capital punishment. Soon after abolishing it crimes jumped up about 36% higher. Frightened citizens demanded that capital punishment be reinstated. After it was reinstated crimes steadily dropped 28%. This shows capital punishments effect on criminals.
Because the death penalty is not publicized criminals do not take it as seriously and continue to break the law. When capital punishment was publicized there was less crime than there is today. If executions were publicized there would be less crime. One Idea is to put executions on public TV, this would scare criminals into doing less crimes. There is some criticism towards this idea, such as “kids under the age of 10 would be scared for life after seeing an execution on TV”. by the age of 12 the average child has seen at least 5 murders on TV that are more detailed, violent, and gory than executions. Another idea was to show executions at a later time or while kids are at school. Another suggestion was to put the executions on lockable channels.
Many proponents of capital punishment should be more severe. Proponents believe should hangings should be reintroduced and replace newer more humane executions. Some say gas chambers should also be reintroduced into California. In the past when capital punishment was more severe there was much less crime than there is now. This is due to more humane executions.
The percentage of taxes that go to fund new jails and pay for food for criminals is very high. The rest goes to schools roads and other public things. Why should criminals be able to get free food and housing while we pay for it ourselves. Some say criminals should pay for all the years they have been in prison. But some say that capital punishment could help here. There are criminals who have life in prison why not just sentence them to death. This would lower the taxes you would need to pay. Also the amount of criminals entering jails is more than the amount leaving. This means more prisons need to be built to accommodate new prisoners. This also means more guards need to be hired. All this is done with tax money. Using the death penalty on prisoners sentenced to life would help decrease taxes.
Today there are more than 3500 people waiting their turn on death row. Out of those 3500, 41% are black, 39% are Hispanic, 12% are Caucasian, 5% Canadian, 2% European, and 1% Asian .
