Useless
I feel useless.
How can I help others,
If I can’t help myself?
My legs feel anchored,
Pulling me down,
I sink deeper in desperation.
A light appears above,
Several hands reach down.
I reach back,
But I fall faster.
While the other hand falter,
One person joins me in my peril.
I tell you “No.”
You tell me, “Forever Friends.”
A light grows around us,
Illuminates our way,
Purifies the dark binds on my legs.
We walk side by side in the darkness,
Looking for a simpler existence.
Even if one doesn’t exist,
I’m okay with just having you by my side.
Days pass by in minutes.
Months pass in hours.
We find a door.
A figure appears and speaks,
“Let your hope not falter,
Nor your courage or trust in one another.
Pass through this door and be tested.”
We look to each other,
And back towards him,
But he has disappeared.
We decide to pass through.
Unsuspecting we are ambushed.
I try my best to defend you,
Despite my best efforts you are hurt.
My knees are weak,
But I carry you anyway.
On our way we face many more dangers.
We both had one thing to count on,
Each other.
When we reach the end the figure reappears,
“You can never find what you wish,”
He says with an evil countenance.
“A simpler existence doesn’t exist.”
You drop to your knees,
Your hope is wavering.
He engulfs the area in darkness.
I can’t find you in the darkness.
You find me shining in the absence of light.
Feeling your grip on my leg,
A grip of desperation,
I shine brighter.
The darkness dissipates and the figure stands taken aback.
“You can dash my hopes,
But not the hopes of my friends.
Its not that a simpler existence doesn’t exist,
Only that we have yet to create it for ourselves.”
I say in defiance.
“Believe what you may,
I know what was,
What is,
And what is to be.
Now watch as I destroy your friend”
He lunges toward you,
And I jump in front.
His black hand pierces my body
“Foolish.
Why waste your life to protect someone so?”
“My life is a small price to pay for my friends”
My body slowly becomes black.
Starting from the wound,
And spreads.
As I fade away I turn to you still on your knees.
“I’m sorry.
I won’t make it to the end with you.”
Tears fill your eyes as your hands just pass through me.
“NO!
This can’t be happening.”
You sob and the tears flow fast.
“You can’t go now.”
Before I fade away completely,
I begin to cry too.
“I’m sorry.”
And I fade away.
You stand up and face the figure.
“And what now can I expect of you?
Do you think you can leave?
You shall meet the same fate as him.
How hard tried to protect you.”
“YOU ARE WRONG!”
You say holding back tears.
“WE could have made a simpler existence.”
You grab his shoulder.
“And I will still try.
I won’t let his sacrifice be in vain.”
A flurry of light that comes forth from your body,
The figure is destroyed with agonizing pain.
You no longer hold back your tears.
For hours you sit alone crying.
You stand up wiping away tears.
Looking about you find nothing.
A door appears and you walk on through.
You take a few steps forward.
The door closes behind you.
You turn back and see,

You run to me and jump.
I catch you and squeeze you hard.
I wipe your tears away and tell you its okay.
“How?”
You ask.
The figure reappears.
“It was your hope to fulfill your dreams,
You courage to face me,
And your trust in your friend.
You have passed the first test of many,
Now return to your world and face the challenges of life.
True friends need nothing more than each other’s company,
And ask for nothing less.
By what you have shown me I know now,
That there is a way for you both to be happy.
Keep each other well,
And let no one break the bonds of friendship between you.”

Back in reality we now part ways.
You go back to your home,
And I to mine.
Hours away by plane,
With phones and internet we are just seconds away.
