The children of the rich are spending millions to look poor. In Europe, the United States, and here in our country, faded denims, unbleached muslin, and cheap sanforized cloth are still the favorite rags of the young affluents.
Looking poor is the new fashion of the rich. Denims have to look as if they have been through centuries of hard times; the katsa, or unbleached muslin has to be wrinkled and worn-out for dramatic effect. Patchwork, which are actual leftovers of tablecloth and curtains or yesterdays are strictly required. Big sister's hand-me-down clothes are recycled to a shirt or blouse.
To be really "in" the poor image has to be sustained. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to look poor.
It is only "fashionable to look poor" if you are really rich!
