'Elvis' Star May Join Cruise's 'Mission'
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- With "Mission: Impossible 3" scheduled to begin production in mid-July, the long-delayed action sequel's supporting cast continues to grow.
The latest buzz has Jonathan Rhys-Meyers close to a deal to appear in the J.J. Abrams-directed film opposite Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames.

There's no word on what role Rhys-Meyers would play, but the 27-year-old Irish actor picked up some recent buzz for his performance as the title King in CBS' miniseries "Elvis" and a lead role in Woody Allen's "Match Point," which screened to general acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival. Rhys-Meyers has also been seen in "Alexander" and "Vanity Fair" in the past year.

It's also being reported in Production Weekly that Michelle Monaghan may be taking one of the film's female leads. It's unclear if Monaghan's addition to the "Mission" cast would preclude speculated appearances by other young stars including Lindsey Lohan and Cruise's current public love Katie Holmes. Scarlett Johansson (Rhys-Meyers' "Match Point" co-star) was originally attached, but parted ways with the film after Abrams put his own mark on the script.

Credits for the Iowa-born Monaghan include the upcoming features "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Syriana" and "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang."

In location casting news, the Reggia, or Royal Palace, in Caserta, Italy will sub in for the Vatican for certain interior shots
