“Alright, then, everyone, quiet down,” Professor Melloric says, glancing pointedly at a few of the noisier students. “It’s time for your first and most elementary class.” She breathes. “Control. Without this, all other Delir would be irrelevant and useless.”
I’m sitting in the main hall, which is ordinarily used for eating, apparently, but which has been converted into a sort of classroom, with neatly spaced tables all around. Upon arriving at the hall, the teachers had separated us into different tables where they thought we wouldn’t talk, so I’m not anywhere near to the two I’d walked up with. There are three other people at my table; a boy with blonde hair who seems to be yelling to his friend a few tables over, and whose friend, I realize, is the greasy-haired boy who kept harassing me when I got off the train. There’s a girl who looks utterly bored out of her mind, and is sitting and vaguely picking at her black nail polish. And there is another boy, with red hair and freckles, who blushes every time someone talks to him.
Professor Melloric doesn’t even stop talking as she confiscates a paper ball one kid had thrown. “We have everyone in your year in one class. To achieve Control takes focus; the less you pay attention, the longer it will take you to learn.” She is walking around the tables slowly as she speaks. “Now, I want you all to close your eyes.”
I close mine, and though it takes a minute, the room grows silent as everyone shuts out the visible world. Professor Melloric is now speaking a little softer. “Every person’s magic looks different. I cannot tell you what yours will look like, only that you must try to sense it. Feel every part of your body, feel the way it works together, and know that Delir works in every particle of you. Concentrate.”
I try to do what she says, and soon find myself sensing something extra. There is the natural course of things in my body, but there is something additional, an extra life, that is as much a part of me as it is its own entity.
Professor Melloric’s voice floats through to me. “First, you will sense it…then, you will see it.”
As if her words are a narration, something slowly comes into focus in my mind’s eye. Something churning into a shape, some sort of light. As I watch, the movement becomes an image of a book. But not an ordinary book; this book is pulsing with life, emitting a constant glow of almost unbearable energy. At first, it is as though I cannot see color, and I couldn’t say if the book was red or blue or anything, for that matter, more than what it appears. But as I concentrate, it appears to be…black. No, the light isn’t black. It’s more like…dark purple, very dark purple, though it certainly looks black.
I hear the Professor’s voice coming toward me. “Now…once you have your image, I want you to use it. Harness it. I want you to make it your own, and, if you can, I want you to try to create some of that light from your Delir in the palm of your hand.”
I stare at the book for a moment, wondering how to do that, but as I focus on what I want to do, the book begins to….open. The pages roll open, and the deep light that shoots out from each page is terrible and wonderful to look at. I reach out, but even as I do so I know my arm isn’t moving, I know that it is my mind that is reaching for the light. My mind comes closer and closer, until finally….
I let out a yelp and open my eyes in time to see a dark purple ball of light disappear from the palm of my hand. I notice a number of kids around me doing the same, or staring at their hand in surprise, or frowning about them in failure.
Professor Melloric quiets us down. “Good job. For those of you who managed to actually pull your Delir into existence in your hand, congratulations. And for those of you who haven’t, don’t worry, it often takes a few tries. Now, I want you all to close your eyes once more, and if you can, this time try to sustain the energy in your hand.”
I close my eyes once more, and wait for the vision of the book, which comes faster this time. I reach out, and begin the process anew…
