Chapter One
It's dark, I can't breathe. The air is thick with ash and smoke. My mind is racing but I can't remember anything. I am in pain. I crawl to my knees and see glints of silver reflecting the flames burning around me. It is my katana, Phoenix. I try to crawl to it slowly, but it seems to be getting further. I call out hoping that I can summon it but my voice is weak. I hear a desperate gasp for air from in the thickness and feel around on the floor until I touch something, cold and stiff. I feel around until I find this bodies face. From the features I can tell that it is Jade. As I touched her she began to gain consciousness. "Arsenju?" she said weakly. "Yes, it's me Jade." I replied. "Wha... What happened here?" I tried to recall but my memory was clouded. I searched my head for answers but I could not reply. "Where is Sanja?" she asked. At the sound of my baby brothers name I began to remember. I fainted and began to have a flash back of what happened. I began to see images flashing through my head, to fast, to confusing. I saw a figure, but not a figure at all, a shadow. Blades as cold as steel, they moved through the air, too fast to counter. I hear a scream, a baby, Sanja! I look around, frantic and panicking, I see my brother being carried away by this shadow figure. I try to pursue "Sanja!" I yelled. "Sanja!" I cried out again. In an instant a white light flashed and then darkness I began to fall deep into the dark abyss of my mind and returned to reality only to appear next to Jade again.
"Brother" Jade called as I began to awaken from this trance. "Brother what was it? What did you see? Do you know where Sanja is?" "No.." i replied. "I failed him, I could not save him!" I yelled crying and frustrated. "I was weak! Our brother is gone because I was weak." I said disappointedly. "Brother, we will find him. For now, we must save ourselves. Let's get out of this building!" yelled Jade. "Right" I replied. I struggled to my feet and cried out for my Katana. "Phoenix!" It slowly reassembled itself and returned to me. I helped Jade to her feet. I could see she had been hit pretty badly. Blood stream from her side and brow. We struggled out of the house. We were in pain, stunned, and confused....
"You young'ns loo'n fer a ride?" said a tall stocky man with an odd accent. This man was different. He had a thick beard and a full face. His eyes were narrow and his nose was big. He was not a local. I did not trust him. "Yes me and my br..." Jade began "No! We are fine!" I said hastily. "But brother..." Jade started. "No we don't need any help, we can do this on our own." I said firmly. "No you can't! You can't do it on your own!" yelled Jade. Realizing her harshness she said in a softer tone, "Everyone needs help brother, even you". I looked away, "Fine" I said unwillingly. "Will take his help." "Oh thank you brother..." said Jade. "You young'ns c'mn er not?" said the man in the wagon. We climbed into the wagon. "Excuse the smell, me old 'ne Betty was tak'n a ride 'n me old wag'n. She mi'ght a left ya' some surprises if ya' aren't careful" the man said laughing. "What is your name, sir?" said Jade. "The names Tom, Tom Cunning III to be ex'ct!" replied the man. "And y'urselves?" Jade answered "My name is Jade, Jade Xiao and this is my brother Arsenju". "He's a shy fella ain't 'e" asked Tom. "No, I just don't talk to strangers" I replied angrily. "W'll I guess I 'ave to make myself no stranger to ya' then" said Tom. "W'll go on, y'll trust me once ya' taste me wife's cooking, p'ut s'me meat on ya'" laughed Tom in that odd laugh of his. As the carriage pushed on I fell into a deep sleep. Suddenly flashes of my past began to appear.
I remembered, I am Aresenju. I am 17 and I was training to be a great warrior in the Imperial Army. Master Weng always said there was something different about me. One day my father began to tell me about how I was supposed to save the world from "dark forces". I think it was his plan to tell me this before he was killed. I think he knew he was going to die. He along with my mother. I still cry everyday for them. I sometimes contemplate suicide but I don't because of my brother Sanja and my sister Jade. My father also told me that there was something special about Sanja and that I should always protect him, even if it means someone's life. I am special, there is something in my blood and in the prophecy, but what? Only my blood can defeat the evil? What could be so important that he'd wait until his last breath to tell me? I raked my mind trying to find answers. I agonized over it, crying thinking of ways. Praying to my ancestors for answers. I feel alone. Distant in this cold dark room. Trapped, my mind at war with itself. I am fighting myself, beating myself for a revelation. Something, even just a glimpse of light that can point me in the right direction. I don't know my destiny, my fate, but I do know that I, am the long awaited Samurai...
