Going green
Green is a color associated with many things: m&m's, envy, ninja turtles, St. Patrick's day, and now it has a new meaning - environmental awareness.

It's interesting how many advertising campaigns are promoting the cause for a healthier world. Alternative fuels/biofuels, hybrid vehicles, children preaching about the environment, and policies on reduced emissions are the all you see on tv these days. It's funny how these things have come a bit too late.

Where was the "immediate action" when a hole was found in the ozone layer many years ago ? It took this long to make anyone notice ? Right now, I'm watching Bravo's "Live Earth" as I think to myself if people are really going to embrace the cause as much as their admiration for the bands they want to see ? To me, it looks more like a MTV's Woodstock 1999 (but somewhat more civil). Among the masses of drunken, staggering fans come the following thought:

"WOOO ! Save the earth !" *throws plastic cup aside, and litters the floor*.

From what I understand, mother nature is still doing community service. It's simply amazing that the most a**l retentive recipients are those in the business world.

"Global warming ? Eh, we've got air conditioning." When you mention how much money they'll save with these alternative methods, that's the only time they'll understand your language. Maybe we should use their ties as nooses and drop them like the old days of the Wild West.

What's science doing about it ? It all depends on who you ask. While some are working on methods and devising various concepts, there's some small development group that's probably working on creating rings that will summon Captain Planet.

"I don't know how to devise the output for the Mati's heart ring. Our plans are shot."

Does this mean that TBS will run episodes of the old TV cartoon to raise awareness for this generation ? At this point, anything is possible. I can just see the american indians and various ancient tribes wagging the finger at us right now.

The incredibly sad thing is how little money the US government gives to environmental research (finding alternative fuels, for example) and how they consistently block any suggestion that we could put incentives in place to make sure people use these alternatives. Not to mention how hard they fight against international treaties for the protection of the environment (frequently threatening to cut foreign aid to countries that want to sign). It's terrible sad

Here in Canada, too, there's no way we will make our agreed reduced emissions quota by the deadline for the Tokyo convention.

And you are absolutely right about activism. So often I see people ranting on and on about how big businesses are destroying the earth. They will join environmental groups on facebook and lecture people who don't. But look into their personal lives and they buy everything new and simply toss out what they don't want anymore (some will make minimal effort to recycle, but that's usually the extent of it). Few will reuse shopping bags or buy sturdier bags to bring with them. Few will walk all the way to a trash can to throw something out. Even fewer will pick trash up and put it away. And yet they feel like heroes because they joined a facebook group stare

Err... sorry for the rant!
