Your Neighborhood Friendly Pit Bull
The door of my prison was the only thing supporting me up. I was so weak, dirty and tired. As I started to think about my life before I was brought here, I heard someone walk in the door. It was a man with long shoulder length hair and was greeting the dogs as he walked down the aisle. I shifted a bit in my spot. All these dogs weren’t as dirty as me. I started at the back of the sign they had hung on my tiny “home”. I wish I knew what it said. I had heard some of the humans saying I was a bad dog. I’m not a bad dog at all! I’m a good girlie. What I didn’t know is that they were planning on putting me to sleep tonight. What I needed was someone to rescue me. Maybe this man would take me home. This, this is the life of a shelter dog. There should be reasons why Pit Bulls like me SHOULDN’T be banned and end up like this.
When some people hear “Pit Bull” they automatically think of all the sad stories of children and people dying from attacks or think “What a vicious dog!”
Never do they think of “Oh, maybe the owner has something to do with what caused this?” Ever hear of “Judge the deed, not the breed’? Think about it.
There are different breeds of dogs that are considered Pit Bulls. “The American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier commonly fall under the category of “Pit Bull”.” (Pit Bull) The physical appearance of a Pit Bull is a short stocky build with a big head with short fine bristly hairs. “The "pit bull" is a medium-sized dog: males weigh 45 - 85 lb. (20 - 38 kg) and females generally weigh 30 - 80 lb. (14 - 36 kg). Their short coat accentuates their muscular bodies, giving them the appearance of a “doggy bodybuilder.” They are known for confidence, intelligence, and loyal temperament. In addition, they have an extremely high pain threshold. As athletic and energetic dogs, "pit bulls" need to be exercised frequently.” (Pit Bull Summery)
These days Pit Bulls are known to be used for Fighting or Breeding. You barely ever hear stories of Pit Bulls with happy homes. The problem with Pit Bulls and Abuse is their owners. People need to be educated on what their getting themselves in with they Adopt (or Buy) a Pit Bull as a pet. Some shelters just give the Pit Bulls out with out telling the adopters how to care for a Pit Bull. Then the new owners get themselves into trouble. Not just the dog but the public and the dogs’ bad history because of the public. You’ll be walking down the street and people will cross to the other side of the street because of your Pit Bull. People will start suspecting things about YOU. You’ll feel like you’re the only person who knows how sweet and gentle your Pit Bull really is. Truth is…you’re not the only Pit Bull owner who feels like this. Many Pit Bull owners feel this way. It doesn’t have to be this way though. There are people who know how Pit Bulls should really be cared for and treated. They’re heroes to some Pit Bull owners. Because the help they can tribute to the care of their lovely Pit Bull.
There are some people who own their lives to their Pit Bulls. For example: “In February 2007 a Pit Bull named ‘Chief’ rescued his family of humans from a spitting cobra by dashing in front of the attacking snake and taking the deadly bite himself. Chief subdued the snake but died of the venom 30 minutes later.” [Wikipedia: Pit Bull] Also one of the most famous Pit Bulls ever is Popsicle. He’s a US Customs dog. Why is he famous? He sniffed out one of the biggest cocaine busts in history. [Wikipedia: Pit Bull] So you see, Pit Bulls can do well. Why can’t we do well for Pit Bulls? So we may see them in Rap Videos as fighting dogs. Way before that there was Pete the Pup from “The Little Rascals”. [Wikipedia: Pit Bull] Also not just Celebrities own Pit Bulls.
All the sad but true stories don’t have to be the life of a Pit Bull. Today I sit on a green couch in a church office with my new name “Britney”. It’s the best ever. Kids come play to play with me and hangout with my daddy. They call him “Nat” or “Nat Giambalvo”. I live with daddy, mommy, Charlie, and Joey. I hear soon there will be a human child that lives in mommy’s belly. Now ever since that day I’m the happiest Pit Bull ever. This is how a life of a Pit Bull should be! Not saddened and ended by death. All Pit Bulls need is to be seen for the good dogs they can be. And be seen as the working dogs they really are.
