• Silently, we gaze upward.
    We await the stars.

    Shimmering, they peek out
Behind the veil of the night.

    The Moon rides high,
    A pearl in the sky.

We lay upon the earth, watching silently.
We are happy, we are content.

The initial joy, the surge of euphoria,
It has mellowed, become something more profound.

We can taste it, feel it, see it swirl,
Smell it on the wind, in the heady scent of the earth.

Somewhere, a wolf howls, and is joined by others.
No one is alone, this joyful happy night.

An eagle screams close by, and is answered,
Its chicks are hungry, but grateful.

A doe passes by, her fawns in tow. She perks her ears, listening.
Her children nuzzle her, and chew their grass placidly.

Contentment lies heavy upon the night air,
Like the smell of the firecrackers still sparking fitfully in our hands.

We don't know why we celebrate.
Frankly, we don't give a damn.

It's nice, to emerge from our shells,
And talk, and watch the stars come out,

    And kiss the moon goodnight.
