I don't think Andy was a good choice to be the replacement manager after Michael Scott left on The Office. He's too similar to Michael without being as funny or endearing as Michael. He's kind of a dipshit in the same ways Michael was, only with a little more self-awareness - which makes him not as fun. He's not serious enough to be realistic and he's not absurd enough to out-do Michael.
They should have chosen someone completely different from Michael to fill his role so it didn't seem like an effort to mask Michael's absence with someone meant to be his equivalent. He can't be replaced, so they shouldn't have gone with a weird, dumb a** boss. They already had the best one possible, so they were doomed to fail.
I find myself bored by season 8. I think perhaps the boss should have been made someone entirely new and the focus should have been very much not on that person. So it would pretty much be like seasons 1-7 only without the focus on the manager. The scenes with any of the other characters being not-managers were always good, so I think part of the problem was still focusing too much on the manager roll without having an interesting person to fill it. It's not even really anything against Andy as a character. Even my very favorite characters wouldn't have done well in that role. They just all have a certain place in the story and it isn't in Michael's office.
