toriyoukaiotaku I think it's just that so many people subconciously take VO's father as a representative of all the family members who have died of cancer. It's such an easy thing for people to do. Because VO is such a well-known and high person on Gaia, it's easy to give an excuse to making this situation a bigger deal than someone they have no idea exists. And if you say that Gaians are taking this more seriously than we would take, say, a family friend, then in many many cases it would be untrue. If a friend of mine had a father who had just died from cancer, I would do something like this as well. As for your local newspaper... VO chose to have his father mentioned, and the deaths of others may be mentioned in a local newspaper if that person's loved ones decides it to be. So that person's loved ones, if they feel that it should be announced, then so be it. (Personally, I would want my family to keep privacy... But that's not the point.)
Millions of cancer deaths do seem to go unheard, but they aren't unheard by their loved ones.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying VO is as near and dear to me as my mother, but I'm trying to get an idea that I have across... I'm just so bad with words.
Personally, I've never experienced having someone I know or a friend of someone I know die of cancer. I'd like to do this project to show that I care, and to support VO because it must be hard. If I knew another person whose father just died of cancer, I would make a paper flower for him or her, too. If I knew five other people, then five more daffodils.
But that's just me and my ideas. :3
