Olivia’s eyes widened as she watched the scene play out before her. Time seemed to slow when she heard the snap of the trigger being pulled. Her body stood rooted to the floor, all she could do was watch as the man she loved began to fall back. As his body hit the floor blood splattered everywhere, staining what was touched. A scream tore from her throat and she began to struggle against her captor. The man who had been restraining her laughed evily and shoved her forward, finally releasing her. The force made her stumble to her knees, her body shook as she turned to look at the man.
"Go, try to save him..." the man said with a sneer "If you can!"
When they laughed and all turned to leave something inside of her seemed to snap. Before she knew what she was doing Olivia had pushed herself up and was moving. The two other men glanced back in confusion but gasped when she full force tackled their one companion.
"What the hell?!" the man screamed as he fell face first to the floor.
Olivia wasted no time and wrapped her hands fully around his slim neck. Her eyes were clouded over in tears but also held darkness in them, as if she wasn't really doing this, her body was acting on its own.
"I'll kill you..." she whispered
"Get her the f*ck off me!" the man choked out struggling to get her hands off his throat
Her grip only tightened when he started coughing and bucking to get her off. Olivia held fast but was soon yanked off and roughly thrown back against the wall. The man she had tackled had gotten up in a rage and began to walk towards her and she shrunk back into the corner.
"Kyle, that's enough!"
Olivia looked over at the doorway to see the man they called "leader". He looked at her with a wicked smile then looked at his crew.
"We're leaving; I got all the things we needed." He said in a calm voice
The man near her cursed her to hell but turned and walked out quietly with his friends. After making sure they were gone she waited in silence still scared of what happened only moments ago. Olivia slowly lifted her head letting her gaze fall to the body only a few feet away from her. Her eyes were wide with tears and she was shaking violently, but she pushed herself to crawl over to him and carefully pulled him into her lap.
"Helix...?" she whispered
She reached down but hesitated as she placed her shaking hand over his bloody one. She whimpered as warm, slick blood pulsed out through her fingers from his body.
"Helix please..." she pleaded "If you can hear me, try to move something...anything, just give me a sign..."
Olivia bit her shivering lip in horrible silence waiting and hoping to see a reaction from him. A few moments passed and she felt his fingers tense and move slowly underneath hers. Her body sagged in relief and a sob slipped from her throat as she leaned down whispering.
"I'm so sorry..."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Earlier that day Wayward Faith had picked up a distress call near one of the border planets. The ship had been labeled as a traveling civilian transport, so they stopped to help. During the docking sequence, Wayward Faith's central power was security was jammed and lost. Turns out when they boarded, it had become a full blown raid on the ship. Gunshots and screams were heard alerting everyone to what was happening. After two hours the Wayward Faith had fallen silent of everything, blood stained the walls of every room while bodies littered the floors. Helix, who had been out in the astro-field came back to find everyone dead, or so he thought. As he searched the bunker rooms he heard screams and immediately knew it was her.
"Of course, she's always looking at the stars!" he thought in panic
He was running towards her pained and terrified voice, up in the observation deck was where he found them. He had crept in to see four semi tall men standing around Olivia who was pushing herself into a corner. She had been running from them, that much he could tell by the way she was gasping for air, her hair was everywhere as well. What angered him was the fear in her eyes and the tears streaming down her cheeks, her bottom lip was bleeding and she looked like she had been slapped. Without thinking he rushed in, giving himself away, and resulting in him taking a bullet for her.
Being as careful as she could, Olivia slipped his arm over her shoulder and slowly lifted him up. She then began to walk, dragging him slightly down the hall to the medical bay.
"Stay with me Helix." she whispered "Please, just stay with me..."
He helped her by walking as much as he could but the pain in his chest was getting worse. He let his head drop as they made their way down the hall and bit his lip as a wave of dizziness and sharp pain hit him.
"Olivia..." he said weakly
"I'm right here... don't worry..." she whispered softly, reassuring him
When they got to the med bay, she flipped on the lights and quickly dragged him to a clean bed. Olivia laid him down carefully and was soon moving around doing what she needed to keep him alive. She hooked him up to a heart monitor and ripped open a new needle to start his Iv drip to get him feeling a little stronger and stable. When she got his Iv in and moved around grabbing the right medicine and drugs she'd need for what was to come. She laid everything out on the tray next to him and leaned over him with a weak smile.
"Helix, I need to give you medicine to get the bullet out." she said "Do you understand?"
Helix turned his head and slowly opened his eyes, which were full of pain and fear. Olivia smiled and felt tears slip down her cheeks when he looked directly at her and smiled weakly.
"You're gonna be fine, you're just going to sleep for a little while." she whispered kissing his cool forehead "I love you."
Helix watched as she snapped on gloves and picked up a syringe, he remained silent when she stuck it in the Iv cord and emptied it in a matter of seconds. He winced when he felt the medicine enter his arm, it felt like ice running through his veins but he began to feel his body numb and looked up at her. Her cheeks were tears-stained and her eyes were puffy and red.
"Olivia, I-..." he spoke in a slurred voice
"Shh, it's alright hun." she whispered "Go to sleep, I'll be right here when you wake up."
He felt her shaking hand move slowly over his forehead, pushing his bangs back. She watched as his eyes glazed over, sleep pulling at him and finally drop.
"I have to work fast." she thought already starting the incision "Get the bullet out, see if it hit anything fatal, clean it, close it, then bandage up."
It took about ten minutes to get the bullet out fully, part of it had shattered from the force of impact but thankfully she had found every piece. She was just beginning to sew the last small cut and felt a wave of relief wash over her when she checked the heart monitor and saw he was doing great. After she closed and bandaged the small wound up, Olivia walked across the room and snapped her gloves off. She turned on the sink and quickly washed her hands, then threw cold water on her face. She closed her eyes enjoying the cold water run over her swollen eyes and cut lip, but the nice feeling was soon cut short.
"No!" she thought
All of a sudden the heart monitor, that had been holding a steady rhythm, began to flat line which let her know he was crashing. Her eyes widened and she dried her hands as she ran back over to him.
"Oh god no!" she thought in panic
The color had drained completely from Helix's face; he was as pale as a ghost. She began to panic but soon remembered her training and began CPR. Tears formed in her eyes once again as she counted compressions.
"Come on Helix..." she whispered
Following the procedure, she tilted his head back, opening all airways, held his nose, and exhaled into his mouth. His chest rose with the oxygen she had given him, but it fell silently with no change. She began compressions once again and grew angry as tears streamed down her face.
"Breath damnit!" she shouted
The flat line sound rang loudly in her ears reminding her that she was failing and she leaned down once again for another breath of air. Watching his chest ride and fall with no change once again made her sob.
"Don't leave me!" she said weakly
Olivia pushed her hands down over his heart and counted, determined to bring him back to her world. She exhaled into his mouth and felt tears slide from her cheeks on to his face.
"Remember..." she cried "how to breathe!"
After five more counts Olivia leaned down for her final one. She pressed her warm lips against his cold ones and exhaled, praying that he would respond. She leaned back flushed and dizzy from all the breathing and watched him for a change. When there was none Olivia brought her hand up to cover her mouth and closed her eyes. She felt her world crashing down right before her eyes, she leaned forward, her head right next to his cool arm and broke down sobbing.
"How could you Helix..." she cried "How could you do that and leave me..."
All of a sudden the flat line stopped and jumped up to a slow but steady beat. Olivia's breath caught in her throat and she looked up in tears to see Helix's bright green eyes looking at her tiredly. A weak smile appeared on his pale face which made her heart ache with joy.
"Hey you..." he whispered in a weak, raspy voice.
Olivia smiled with tears in her eyes and leaned over him carefully, her hair slipped around them both causing the nightmare to be blocked out.. She reached up with shaking hands and held his face, happy to feel his warmth returning. She gently rested her forehead on his as she cried in happiness and whispered in tears.
"Hey you..."
