In the Realm of Silma there are many fantastical creatures. Some are lovely and gentle, while others are savage and deadly, still others are just strange. There are the elves, who rule the realm with kindness, said to be among the longest living beings in existence. Then there are the humans. Creative, fascinating, and destructive. They think they're the only intelligent creatures, and thus take on an air of owning everything. But there are, of course, exceptions. There are the protectors, originally purely composed of elves, but now consisting of any humin race (humins is a collective term for magical creatures that look like humans, including elves), although they're mostly humans now. The elves have a monarchy, but a pure one. A king and a queen were chosen long ago from the wisest and most pure of elves, the children of the stars. Their descendants have ruled through the ages, the most worthy chosen from all the potential rulers. The current Royal family is made of King Elnar and Queen Anora, and their twin daughters, Sapphire and Jade. They also have several cousins eligible to hold the throne next, as well as their children. There are dragons; similar to humans in their wavering loyalties. Some are good, some are evil, some are neither and simply live in peaceful sleep until raiders seek to steal their trove. They need their gems, they use them as an impromptu armour to cover their softer stomach scales. The most infamous of dragons is Kire. He has cursed all dragons to the fate of being forever misunderstood by humans in his historically destructive rampages. The mid-northern area of the realm is a beautiful place of abundance. Many trees grow and you can find animals all times of the year. Mountains rise up from the ground like slowly waking giants, and valleys sink so deep that if one were to dig straight to the other side, he would be drowned by the water from the sea rushing in to fill the great hole. There are meadows and forests so full of life, you could swear you could hear the fairies singing their silent songs. In the northernmost area is a permanently snowy landscape. Few ever venture there due to the frequent storms, but some elves have returned from there with some ice from the base of a great mountain which houses a healing spring. The water has been used to fertilize the entire elven kingdom, making it reputably the most beautiful place in all the realm, though few humans have ever been allowed access to the areas. They are prevented from entering by a magical barrier, sent by the Creator, that is around both the main kingdom and its outposts. The middle area of the realm is a more desolate place. The Eastern side is taken up by a giant mesa rising from the ground. It's known as the wastelands, where only the most vile and dangerous of villains are sent there to stay. A volcano had gone off there, over a thousand years ago, making that entire landscape a charred plain of nothingness. Only a few dead trees can be seen on the empty plateau, aside from the few dwelling places of the dark beings that reside there. The Western side is a barren desert; scorching heat in the day, and freezing cold at night. Few animals can live in the harsh environment, and fewer plants. At the edge, where the forests and desert meet, In the South of the realm, very few have ventured and returned. All that is known of it are the dense jungles that act as a wall, suddenly terminating the desert and starting the fathomless ocean of green that few have ever returned from. No one knows what lies beyond that near impenetrable fortress of wood and leaves, or even within. Only one has returned, a human explorer with a very sharp machete and a strong need to see the unknown. He spoke of wondrous creatures there, birds of all colours and plants that could swallow a person whole. Large insects and venomous snake-like plants rule that land. He spoke of what looked like a female lion, only blacker than the new moon, with spines protruding along its back and canines as long as your hand. They all assumed he was crazy, suffering hallucinations from the deadly dry heat of the deserts, for what plant could have the fangs of a snake? The whole area is surrounded by a vast ocean, dotted with uncharted islands and filled with strange and wondrous creatures. There are places so deep that even the merfolk haven't ventured into them, and places so shallow that you could walk for hours and not have the water reach above your shoulders. There are other realms, called the Far Realms, which can be accessed only through special portals that are few and far between. There is the Spirit Realm, the Guardian Realm, the Demon Realm, the Realm of Minds, and many others we do not yet know of. Guardians are the spirits of creatures past who are assigned, or linked, to a young humin or a specially trained human. They link their essences to gem stones that act as direct, quick portals to and from the Guardian Realm, so their master may call or send away the essence at almost any time, unless the guardian is badly injured in which case they will immediately retreat their realm until they heal. It's very hard to actually kill a guardian. This world is a wondrous place, filled with things from the mundane to the strange, the factual to the fantastical, and the lovely to the horrifying.
